Open And Shut Case, An: The Story Of Keyhole Or Minimally Invasive Surgery

Keyhole surgery has been made possible through the rapid development of various medical technologies, first pioneered in the 1970s. Revolutionary in the way it reduced the risk, surgical complications, healing time and scarring compared to open surgery, keyhole surgery soon became the preferred method throughout many surgical specialities. Here, John Wickham, the 'godfather' of robotic surgery, reflects on a life spent in research, discovery and struggle for innovation in order to make keyhole surgery widespread, accessible and available to patients. An Open and Shut Case tracks the evolution of surgery in the later parts of the 20th century, from initial surgical training in the 1960s to the rapid growth in the field of minimally invasive techniques throughout the 1970s and 80s in many specialities, precursors to the techniques used today. It concludes with a look at the effect of the National Health Service on the practice of medicine and nursing in the UK throughout this time.Perfect for surgeons and those interested in the history of surgery and surgical techniques, it also focusses on lessons learnt, both good and bad, when dealing with the management of public health.

Uterine Fibroids

Uterine fibroids are the commonest benign tumors of the uterus and pelvis, and are the single most common cause of surgery in women apart from childbirth. As such, this pioneering new book, which compares and contrasts conventional surgical treatments with the rapid emergence of uterine artery embolization as an alternative and less invasive procedure, looks set to provide a turning-point for the future treatment of this condition. A host of international experts from gynecology and interventional radiology have contributed chapters, including one by Dr Jacques Ravina the pioneer of uterine artery embolization. Although the main focus is on embolization, the book does also give a very comprehensive account of the epidemiology, pathology, diagnosis and management of uterine fibroids, and of conventional treatments such as hysterectomy and myomectomy. This all-inclusive approach makes the book suitable for gynecologists, radiologists, and for all trainees and residents looking after patients with uterine fibroids.

Fibroids

Uterine fibroids are benign tumors of the smooth muscle of the uterus. They are the most common pathologic abnormalities of the female genital tract, occurring in 20%–50% of women older than 30 years. Some fibroids present with symptoms, whereas others are asymptomatic. The etiology of uterine fibroids is unclear. As such, this book presents comprehensive information on clinical presentation, diagnosis, and management of myoma. Chapters discuss symptoms such as bleeding, pain, and sexual dysfunction, as well as imaging modalities for diagnosis and options for treatment, including medications and surgery.

Overachievement

Were you ever advised to "just relax" before making a big speech? Don’t. From Texas A&M professor and celebrity advisor, Dr. John Eliot, this insightful guide takes a sledgehammer to what most of us think we know about doing our best. Eliot explains how mainstream psychology moves us in the wrong direction when it comes to stress management and performance enhancement; techniques like visualization and goal setting, based on pseudoscience rather than empirical evidence, often get in our way rather than propel us forward. Drawing on field-tested experiments and extensive research in neuropsychology, Eliot shares why these “common sense” strategies tend to come up short for the majority ...
