The book intervenes into the contemporary debate on religion, politics, and economy, focusing on the field of formation which emerges as these seemingly autonomous spheres encounter one another. Empirically, it concentrates on examples from literature, theatre, and cinema as well as a case study of the recent revolts in Turkey where a ‘moderate’ Islamic government is in power. Theoretically, its focus is on the contemporary ‘return’ of religion in the horizon of the critique of religion, seeking to articulate an affirmative politics that can re-evaluate the value of dominant values in religious governance and governance of religion.

Toplumsal Tarih’in bu sayısının kapağına da taşıdığımız, Saadet Özen’in “Sinematografta İstanbul’un Fethi, Sinema Salonunda Tarihyapımı” başlıklı yazısı İstanbul’un fethi üzerine çekilmiş filmleri inceleyerek, bu yapımların çekildikleri dönemin siyasal ve kültürel ortamını nasıl yansıttıklarını tartışıyor. Ayrıca, bu sayımızda da gerek Osmanlı-Türkiye gerekse de Çin tarihinde salgın hastalıkları merceğine alan küçük bir dosyaya daha yer verdik. Metin Atmaca’nın “’Semavi Bir Ceza’: 19. Yüzyıl Osmanlı-İran Sınırında Veba” başlıklı makalesinin, Osmanlı’nın 1870-71 yıllarında Kürdistan’da görülen veba salgınına müdahalesini modern devletin inşasındaki rolü perspektifinden ele alarak, bu alandaki birikime önemli bir katkıda bulunduğunu düşünüyoruz. Giray Fidan’ın “1938 Çin Kolera Salgınında Türkiye’den Gönderilen Aşılar” başlıklı yazısı ise Milletler Cemiyeti’nden kolera salgınında kullanılmak üzere aşı talep eden Çin’e ilk yardım gönderen ülkelerden birinin Türkiye olduğunu hatırlatıyor.
