Fascinating and surprising developments are taking place in the classification of algebraic varieties. The work of Hacon and McKernan and many others is causing a wave of breakthroughs in the minimal model program: we now know that for a smooth projective variety the canonical ring is finitely generated. These new results and methods are reshaping the field. Inspired by this exciting progress, the editors organized a meeting at Schiermonnikoog and invited leading experts to write papers about the recent developments. The result is the present volume, a lively testimony to the sudden advances that originate from these new ideas. This volume will be of interest to a wide range of pure mathematicians, but will appeal especially to algebraic and analytic geometers.
A man lives in the wild with a dog as his only companion... and great powers at his disposal. All he needs is an animal's hide to take on its abilities. Together, he and his dog will go off to seek a terrible monster, in a silent story brought to vivid life by Burniat and Michiels. Fierce, funny, strange, endearing!
Hades, God of the Underworld, is seeking a successor. The prize? His fabled horn of plenty, source of boundless wealth. But to winnow down the applicant pool, Hades has devised a series of challenges as deadly to hopefuls as they are enlightening to readers, taking us all on a tour of the soil: its uses and abuses, riches and resources. Beneath our feet lies a world teeming with life, whose fate is intimately tied with our own. In this fantasy adventure Mathieu Burniat deftly blends pop science and mythology to educate and enthrall on a topic vital to our troubled times.
This volume contains the Proceedings of the conference "Complex and Differential Geometry 2009", held at Leibniz Universität Hannover, September 14 - 18, 2009. It was the aim of this conference to bring specialists from differential geometry and (complex) algebraic geometry together and to discuss new developments in and the interaction between these fields. Correspondingly, the articles in this book cover a wide area of topics, ranging from topics in (classical) algebraic geometry through complex geometry, including (holomorphic) symplectic and poisson geometry, to differential geometry (with an emphasis on curvature flows) and topology.
This book presents the proceedings from the conference on algebraic geometry in honor of Professor Friedrich Hirzebruch's 70th Birthday. The event was held at the Stefan Banach International Mathematical Center in Warsaw (Poland). Topics covered in the book include intersection theory, singularities, low-dimensional manifolds, moduli spaces, number theory, and interactions between mathematical physics and geometry. Also included are articles from notes of two special lectures. The first, by Professor M. Atiyah, describes the important contributions to the field of geometry by Professor Hirzebruch. The second article contains notes from the talk delivered at the conference by Professor Hirzebruch. Contributors to the volume are leading researchers in the field.
Combines cutting-edge research and expository articles in Hodge theory. An essential reference for graduate students and researchers.
The 1969 and 1986 Vienna Conventions on the Law of Treaties are essential components of the international legal order. This is the first Commentary on their provisions, containing thorough and well-structured analyses of each of their Articles. It draws on preparatory works and practice and is written by a large collection of experts from the field
The volume consists of invited refereed research papers. The contributions cover a wide spectrum in algebraic geometry, from motives theory to numerical algebraic geometry and are mainly focused on higher dimensional varieties and Minimal Model Program and surfaces of general type. A part of the articles grew out a Conference in memory of Paolo Francia (1951-2000) held in Genova in September 2001 with about 70 participants.
Mathematical algorithms are a fundamental component of Computer Aided Design and Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) systems. This book provides a bridge between algebraic geometry and geometric modelling algorithms, formulated within a computer science framework. Apart from the algebraic geometry topics covered, the entire book is based on the unifying concept of using algebraic techniques – properly specialized to solve geometric problems – to seriously improve accuracy, robustness and efficiency of CAD-systems. It provides new approaches as well as industrial applications to deform surfaces when animating virtual characters, to automatically compare images of handwritten signatures and to improve...
