Weapons Of The Rich. Strategic Action Of Private Entrepreneurs In Contemporary China

This book provides a fresh perspective on the political agency of private entrepreneurs in contemporary China. Most Chinese scholarship describes this group as being politically acquiescent due to systematic co-optation by the party state. This book, however, argues that private entrepreneurs should be understood, and analytically conceptualized, as a 'strategic group' that makes use of different formal and informal channels to safeguard and expand its interests, though so far it has not challenged the current regime.State-business relations in contemporary China should thus be understood not in terms of mere clientelism, but as a dynamic symbiosis in which private entrepreneurs contribute substantially to policy and institutional change. This book is based on several years of comparative empirical fieldwork across China. With its rich and unique qualitative data and insights, this volume contributes significantly to our understanding of the political behaviour and impact of private entrepreneurs in contemporary China.

China's New Business Elite

China's New Business Elite

The transition from a planned to a market economy that began in China in the late 1970s unleashed an extraordinary series of changes, including increases in private enterprise, foreign investment, the standard of living, and corruption. Another result of economic reform has been the creation of a new class—China's new business elite. Margaret M. Pearson considers the impact that this new class is having on China's politics. She concludes that, contrary to the assumptions of Westerners, these groups are not at the forefront of the emergence of a civil society; rather, they are part of a system shaped deliberately by the Chinese state to ensure that economic development will not lead to democratization.

Politics can be a profitable business investment. This can be found in Republican era Canton amidst a politically fragmented China. Competing merchant groups in Hong Kong sought to finance the regional government in Canton in return for financial concessions. Colonial Hong Kong made these attempts possible because it offered the merchants a haven to which they could retreat. Merchants in modern China, different from their western counterparts, remained dependent on the political authorities. This patronage system made commercial endeavours dependent on politics and, significantly, it embedded business in politics - a phenomenon that still exists in China today.

This book describes the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce's changing relationship with the state and with businesses in the region. Some of the wealthiest and most influential businessmen in Singapore and Malaysia have served as leaders of the Chamber. Drawing on archival materials and extensive interviews, Visscher provides lively biographical sketches that highlight the circumstances and personal values that propelled these and other leading Chinese businessmen to success and to prominence. He also examines Chinese business practices, considering cultural elements as well as state and market forces, and highlights unique features of the Chinese experience in Singapore. By viewing Singapore from the perspective of a well established non-governmental organisation as it struggled, negotiated and cooperated with the state, this book offers an alternative to conventional political histories.

The Chinese economy has grown faster for a longer period than any other economy in the world. It is now the second, and will soon become the largest, global economy. This is an astonishing transformation of a country that in the late 1970s was one of the poorest in Asia. Central to this economic miracle has been the emergence of a private sector of entrepreneurs who have started and grown businesses of all sizes and types. This book explores these wealth creators and builders of China’s new economy, and offers guidance on the best ways to work with China’s entrepreneurs and their growing businesses. Entrepreneurship in China looks at the dynamic and changing nature of entrepreneurship, a...
