Using a technique, which he has since patented, Ramirez projects films onto a circular, slightly convex, wooden panel, which he has gilded by hand in an elaborate process, leaf by leaf and layer by layer. This creates a unique projection surface, which determines the form of the projected images. In this debut artist book, an entire lifetime of dreaming in light is condensed to display a process unique to the California-born artist, whom Wim Wenders considers 'a true 21st century Renaissance artist.'

Fiction. Latino/Latina Studies. Rooted in a Chicana/Latina/indigenous geographic and cultural sensibility, the stories in flesh to bone are concerned with borders of all kinds and the potential for transformation and healing. The nine stories write and rewrite "myth" from a woman's point of view, as they tell stories of women and children whose lives are shaped by the social, political, ecological, and economic disruption and violence of the borderlands. "An original and authentic voice...with an original vision. A blend of indigenismo and folktales retold in a modern vein.... These stories at times seem to come from the clouds, from spirits of ancient ancestors, or from the oblique corners of the human consciousness.... A new and engaging duende is being born in these pages."—Alejandro Murguía "If Chagall had written, he would have painted words in the fierce brushstrokes of ire'ne lara silva's stories. If Remedios Varo had told stories, she would have wound the tendrils of her magic the way ire'ne lara silva paints her world."—Cecile Pineda

Lara Jüssen takes the case of Latin American household and construction workers in Madrid to show how ir/regular labour migrants make citizenship available for themselves through emplacements, embodiments and enactments of citizenship. After describing the sociopolitical context of crisis and resistance in Spain, citizenship is anthropologized in order to approach it through the workplace: the private household and the construction site. Based on empirical results from interviews, it is analyzed how citizenship is emplaced through ego-centered networks and assemblages that situate the migrants’ social belonging; how it is embodied through carving out of identities of the migrant workers, intersectionality of gender, ethnicity, and class, affects that imprint workers’ bodies, and experiences of violence at the workplace; then citizenships’ enactment is scrutinized through workers’ empowerment for rights, individually at the workplace and collectively through demonstrations and political theater performance in urban public space.

Next of Kin

As both an idea and an institution, the family has been at the heart of Chicano/a cultural politics since the Mexican American civil rights movement emerged in the late 1960s. In Next of Kin, Richard T. Rodríguez explores the competing notions of la familia found in movement-inspired literature, film, video, music, painting, and other forms of cultural expression created by Chicano men. Drawing on cultural studies and feminist and queer theory, he examines representations of the family that reflect and support a patriarchal, heteronormative nationalism as well as those that reconfigure kinship to encompass alternative forms of belonging. Describing how la familia came to be adopted as an or...
