Sting Dynamics of Wind Tunnel Models

Wind tunnel model support stings can be subjected to transient aerodynamic and inertial loads which will create oscillatory translations and angular deflections. These transient oscillations always impair steady-state data accuracy and can be large enough to cause structural failure. The primary result of this investigation has been the formulation of a mathematical analysis for the dynamic response of sting-balance combinations subjected to arbitrary transient load inputs. The analysis also provides for sting rigid body motion so that model to tunnel injection and continuous sting rotation can be simulated. A computer program was written to numerically solve the sting-model-balance notion equations.

Wind tunnel tests were conducted to provide support interference information for planning and directing wind tunnel tests at supersonic and hypersonic Mach numbers. Sting-length and sting-diameter effects on base and surface pressures of a blunt 6-deg cone with a sliced base were investigated at Mach numbers 2, 3, 5, and 8. Dynamic stability tests on a blunt 7-deg cone were also conducted at Mach numbers 2, 5, and 8. The objectives of the 7-deg cone tests were to define critical sting lengths as determined by the measurement of dynamic stability derivatives, static pitching moment, and base pressure. Two frequencies of oscillation were investigated, and data were obtained for laminar, transi...

Influences of Sting Support on Aerodynamic Loads Acting on Captive Store Models

In a series of wind tunnel tests, measurements were made of the aerodynamic loads acting on eight different store configurations mounted in the external captive position on a one-twentieth-scale model of the F-4C aircraft. Store models included blunt and contoured afterbody shapes, stable and unstable designs, and large (one per pylon) and small (rack-mounted) configurations. The tests were conducted in an effort to evaluate sting effects on captive store loads. Sting effects were considered to consist of two contributions: the effect of altering the afterbody of a store to allow insertion of a sting, and the effect of the presence of the sting. Altering the afterbody of an unstable store influenced captive loads less than altering a stable configuration. It was also determined that the presence of a sting affected most the pitching and yawing moments.

Jingshin Physics Symposium In Memory Of Prof Wolfgang Kroll

Dr W Kroll, a young post-doc working under Heisenberg at Leipzing in the 1930s, was forced to escape from the Nazis and eventually came to the National Taiwan University in 1941. He taught many of the advanced courses in theoretical physics for over two decades, and prepared a generation of physicists in Taiwan. A symposium on pure and applied physics was held in memory of Prof Kroll at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in August 1996. These proceedings, composed of papers contributed to the symposium by many of Prof Kroll's former students now reaching professorial ranks in the West, reflect in a small measure the legacy he left behind.
