The Social Sciences in Canada

The Social Sciences in Canada is about the background and history of the Social Science Federation of Canada in honour of its fifty years of national activity. There can be little doubt that during the last fifty years the federation, and its predecessors, have had a substantial impact on the development of the social sciences in Canada. The history of this organization is probably the best barometer that we have for recording the changes that have occurred in the relation between social scientists and Canadian society.

This first volume has as its main focus the philosophical foundations of Michalos’ work and describes it in the broad context of the study of logic, the philosophy of social sciences, and a general theory of value. After distinguishing things that have value from the value that things might have, it describes the foundations of a pragmatic theory of value. This theory plays a key role in the author’s research on the quality of life and connects his empirical research to the philosophical tradition of the American pragmatists William James, Ralph Barton Perry, John Dewey and Clarence Irving Lewis. The volume addresses various aspects and issues concerning decision making, including decision procedures used in committees, used for assessing the acceptability of scientific theories and new technologies, procedures for a science court, ethical issues involved in the formation of beliefs, some limitations of classical economists’ alleged postulates of rational preference, and the importance of analytic guides to decision making. Finally, it describes the organization of the Social Sciences Federation of Canada and a formal accounting system for scientific research.

You've got ten minutes to get that flag down...

First published in 1986, this volume presents the proceedings of a Conference organized by the Nova Scotia Coalition on Arts and Culture in response to massive government cuts in funding to the arts in preceding years. In the words of the editor, distinguished scholar Malcolm Ross, it "should be read as an Open Letter--to the artistic community, of course, but also to the wider public, the audiences, to those allies whose support is essential in ensuring the future of the arts in Canada, perhaps in ensuring the future of Canada." With contributions from John Ralston Saul, Rick Salutin, David Suzuki and many others, "You've got ten minutes to get that flag down..." is a vivid, immediate report on the state of Canadian culture in the mid-1980s.

Trans/acting Culture, Writing, and Memory

Trans/acting Culture, Writing, and Memory is a collection of essays written in honour of Barbara Godard, one of the most original and wide-ranging literary critics, theorists, teachers, translators, and public intellectuals Canada has ever produced. The contributors, both established and emerging scholars, extend Godard’s work through engagements with her published texts in the spirit of creative interchange and intergenerational relay of ideas. Their essays resonate with Godard’s innovative scholarship situated at the intersection of such fields as literary studies, cultural studies, translation studies, feminist theory, arts criticism, social activism, institutional analysis, and publi...
