THE SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH LABORATORY DIRECTOR

Dr. Carl J. Sindermann, Ph.D., D.Sc. (Hon.), in addition to his long term positions as research laboratory director and research center director, has been a prolifi c writer of technical articles and books in his scientifi c specialties as well as a series of books about scientists – of which this is the sixth volume. Some of his books have won awards and some have not; probably his most important contribution to science itself was his thousand page two volume treatise on Principal Diseases of Marine Fish and Shellfi sh, published by Academic Press in 1990 and supported at that time by a published record of more than 100 of his own technical papers and a rapidly expanding printed literatur...

In this inspiring book of personal insight and sound advice, veteran scientist Carl J. Sindermann gives an insider's look at the competitive world of science and reveals the best strategies for attaining prominence and success. Taking apart the many different roles scientists must play during their careers, Sindermann compares common mistakes scientists make with what the best strategists do-whether they are publishing papers, presenting data, chairing meetings, or coping with government or academic bureaucracy. In the end, he maintains, well-honed interpersonal skills, a savvy eye on one's competitors, and excellent science are the keys to a satisfying and successful career.

Ocean Pollution provides a unique look at the effects of estuarine and coastal pollution on resource species. One of the primary objectives of the book is to provide an accurate assessment of the state of the inshore marine environment and its inhabitants. Coastal habitat degradation is discussed, and principal findings from modeling and other research efforts are analyzed and evaluated. The research undertaken thus far extends beyond the effects of pollution on resource population size to disease effects in fish and humans, effects on aquaculture, and effects on productive systems of the oceans. These far-reaching consequences - and potential consequences - of ocean pollution are expertly presented, and suggestions for mitigation are made. Realistic scenarios about the future effects of ocean pollution are outlined, providing a powerful tool for researchers and regulators.

In 1996, after more than a decade of researching the effects of over-population and the consequent pollution of the greater metropolitan New York City area, Carl Sindermann published his observations and conclusions in Ocean Pollution: Effects on Living Resources and Humans, a mostly technical document that emphasized the pathological effects of coastal pollution. The stressed species inhabiting the coastal waters of New York Bight had been the subject of several laboratory programs, which when integrated with ongoing pollution studies, provided a superb opportunity to assess the effects of human impact upon a fragile coastal system. WORLD TRAVELS WITH A PERIPATETIC MARINE SCIENTIST

This is the 24th book about science and scientists published by Carl J. Sindermann, Ph.D. It describes in some detail many places in the world that he visited in connection with his roles as government science administrator and scientific authority in marine pathology during a long career as a research laboratory and center director with the federal government on the Atlantic Coast of the United States. During that period he occupied various active roles in international scientific organizations such as the European-based International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) and the Tokyo-based United States-Japan Natural Resources Panels (UJNR). His research interests, while naturally concentrating on the Atlantic coast of North America, have been much broader, particularly with periodic oceanic phenomena such as disease outbreaks, which can be of worldwide occurrence. This book describes some of the travels involved in attempting to make the subject of disease in the oceans more understandable and to present the United States research favorably to the world scientific community.

The first edition of this book on diagnosis and control of diseases in North American marine aquaculture was published in 1977, with the promise that the material would be updated frequently, in view of the rapid expansion of marine aquaculture and the importance of disease control to successful production. Now, ten years later, the promised update has finally been prepared, incorporating new information that has been published in the intervening time. The concept and format of the book remain the same - to present information on disease diagnosis and control in a concise standard format, emphasising those diseases which affect survival of cultured populations. Because of the amount of new m...
