Our outfit, the 1st Battalion, 8th Infantry, 4th Infantry Division, landed in Vietnam in September of 1966 in Tuy Hoa, South Vietnam. We set up base camp and went out on a few patrols, getting used to the weather was tough; but really, the least of our problems. From then until March 22, 1967, we lost about 8 men because of ambushes and other reasons. On March 20 we were sent into a firebase camp for a 3 day stand down inasmuch as we had been in the field for over 45 days and really needed the rest. Paintings of Portland
The city of Portland and its surroundings, including the islands of Casco Bay, have inspired a wide range of art over the past 200 years. The “city by the sea,” as Longfellow famously called it, has been a visual talisman for a host of artists, from early masters like Harrison Bird Brown and John Bradley Hudson to a remarkable roster of contemporary painters. Subjects include many of the city’s signature buildings, including the Custom House and Portland Head Light, as well as street scenes, the waterfront, harbor, back bay, and surrounding landscapes—even the Million Dollar Bridge. Paintings of Portland will feature a wide range of motifs, in all seasons and represented by an array of styles. About a quarter of the book will be devoted to historical pieces, the rest to paintings by contemporary artists.

A Hill Country Paradise?
In the mid-1800s, land speculators said that Western Travis County in Texas would be a paradise, a perfect place to grow crops, raise livestock, and build a life. Settlers were seduced by such stories, and many of them including a large segment of German immigrants made their way to this promised land.
