Italy’s economic expansion after World War Two triggered significant social and cultural change. Secularization accompanied this development and triggered alarm bells across the nation’s immense Catholic community. The Devil and the Dolce Vita is the story of that community – the church of Popes Pius XII, John XXIII and Paul VI, the lay Catholic Action association, and the Christian Democratic Party – and their efforts in a series of culture wars to preserve a traditional way of life and to engage and tame the challenges of a rapidly modernizing society. Roy Domenico begins this study during the heady days of the April 1948 Christian Democratic electoral triumph and ends when pro-div...

Brescia and its great race

An original look at the great epic of the Mille Miglia, "the most beautiful race in the world", told here through the places that, in the city of Brescia, saw the unbridled passion for the racing cars of the "Freccia Rossa" born and developed, from the first edition of 1927 to the current, fascinating historical re-enactments. The stamping of the cars in corso Magenta and at the Foro Boario, then in piazza della Vittoria and piazza della Loggia; departures and arrivals in viale Venezia, via Duca degli Abruzzi, via Triumplina; the places of socialization and conviviality, such as the Taverna Mille Miglia in Corso Cavour. Faces, streets, squares of the race of yesterday and today come back alive and frenetic thanks to a synthetic chronological reconstruction, illustrated by many unpublished images and enriched by the biographies of the main protagonists of Brescia.

Residentialism

This book tells the story of the making of a community, which occurred hand-in-hand with the building of an archipelago of residences in the countryside north of Rome. Lina Malfona together with Fabio and Simone Petrini designed and built this archipelago of ‘ultra-residential’ villas, a place to experience private as well as public life. This book tells the story of the making of a community, which occurred hand-in-hand with the building of an archipelago of suburban residences, which reaffirm the value of the countryside within a technological and digital society. From 2010 onwards, Lina Malfona together with Petrini Architects and thanks to the support of the structural engineer Tommaso Malfona has been designing and building this archipelago of villas in the countryside north of Rome, which is also where their home-studio is located. This experimental residence has become a point of reference for the design of an innovative housing typology, an ‘ultra-residential’ villa as a place to experience private as well as public life. With Contributions of Pippo Ciorra (introduction); Kenneth Frampton, Stanley Allen (blurbs)
