The Letters of Dr Charles Burney

This volume of letters by Charles Burney, the first to be published since 1991, runs from 1794 to 10 January 1800, beginning with his recovery from a debilitating attack of rheumatism, continuing with the death of his wife in 1796, and ending with the shocking death of his daughter Susanna. Certain leitmotifs, typical of Burney's concerns, stand out throughout the volume: his trepidation over the war with France and its effect on domestic politics, his exhausting social life, his travels, and his publication of the memoirs of the poet and lyricist Metastasio. A staunch monarchist and a self-confessed 'allarmist', Burney is haunted 'day and night' by the French Revolution and the threat that ...

This volume provides an overview of the ways the Italian school of quality of life studies addresses well-being and quality of life, from both a substantive and a methodological point of view. It discusses various topics such as those of equitable and sustainable wellbeing, lifestyles, the organization of economy and welfare, as well as aspects related to the measurement of quality of life in small towns, institutional transparency and corruption prevention indicators. Chapters presented in this volume are drawn from papers presented at the conferences of the Italian Association for Quality of Life Studies (AIQUAV) held in Florence, Italy, in 2015 and 2016. The volume is organised into three parts. The first part is devoted to methods and indicators for research on quality of life, the second part to social sustainability, lifestyles, cultural aspects and local applications, and the third to economy, welfare and quality of life. The volume hosts contributions that are interdisciplinary in scope and mirror the complexity of the globalized world.

Crusade of Charity

"During World War II a powerful system for prisoners of war to communicate with their loved ones, and for their loved ones to learn about their imprisonment, was developed through the Vatican Information Office, which was set up by Pope Pius XII immediately after the war began in 1939. Young and old appealed to Pius XII for help in locating missing sons, husbands, relatives, and friends. In turn, the office he set up to deal with such requests sought night and day to provide information and comfort. To help the effort, Vatican Radio broadcast 1.2 million shortwave messages asking for news about missing individuals." "Not only are there hundreds of thousands of documents regarding this clearinghouse activity in the Vatican Secret Archives, but there are also 20 million letters with additional information on file cards for each of these individuals. Crusade of Charity reveals this untold story of grief and heroism, comfort and support, through documents, letters, telegrams, and reports of the apostolic delegates who visited war prisoners in camps around the world, as well as through the words of family and friends."--BOOK JACKET.
