Em 2022, na semana do bicentenário do Grito do Ipiranga, o Departamento de Química da UFMG promoveu por dois dias o simpósio Ciência e Liberdade, com a participação de vários pesquisadores de diferentes origens. Juntaram-se especialistas, estudantes e outros interessados numa reflexão sobre a ciência que se praticava no Brasil à época de nossa emancipação política. O resultado foi extraordinário, tendo possibilitado discussões fecundas em torno de práticas científicas e suas implicações no período em que o Iluminismo exercia forte influência nas elites brasileiras. O simpósio mostrou que pensar a ciência no Brasil, mesmo de forma modesta, vem de longa data, não obstante algum negacionismo em contrário. Este negacionismo, aliás, estava presente à época do simpósio em muitos aspectos da vida nacional, levando a vários debates frutíferos. O presente volume é uma coleção dos temas discutidos no simpósio.
Blockchain and Applications
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 1st International Congress on Blockchain and Applications 2021, BLOCKCHAIN'21, held in Salamanca, Spain, in October 2021. Among the scientific community, blockchain and artificial intelligence are a promising combination that will transform the production and manufacturing industry, media, finance, insurance, e-government, etc. Nevertheless, there is no consensus with schemes or best practices that would specify how blockchain and artificial intelligence should be used together. The 38 full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from over 44 submissions. Sustainable Energy for Smart Cities
This book constitutes the refereed post-conference proceedings of the 3rd EAI International Conference on Sustainable Energy for Smart Cities, SESC 2021, held in November 2021. The conference was framed within the 7th Annual Smart City 360° Summit. Due to COVID-19 pandemic the conferences were held virtually. The 13 revised full papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 28 submissions. They present multidisciplinary scientific results toward answering the complex technological problems of emergent Smart Cities. The subjects related to sustainable energy, framed with the scope of smart cities and addressed along with the SESC 2021 conference, are crucial to guarantee an equilibrium among economic growth and environmental sustainability, as well as to contribute to reducing the impact of climate change.

Tissue-Specific Cell Signaling
Signal transduction comprises the intracellular biochemical signals which induce the appropriate cell response to an external stimulus. The players in signal transduction are diverse, from small molecules as first messengers, to proteins, receptors, transcription factors, among many others. The different signaling pathways and the crosstalk between them originates the unique signaling profile of every cell type in the human body. The cell signaling specificity depends on several aspects including protein composition, subcellular localization and complexes and gene promoters. This textbook provides a comprehensive overview of the specific signaling pathways on a variety of human tissues.
