The Migrant's Time

  • Categories: Art

The conditions of alienation and exclusion are inextricably linked to the experience of the migrant. This volume explores both the increasing emergence of the theme of migration as a dominant subject matter in art as well as the ways in which the varied mobilities of a globalized world have radically reshaped art's conditions of production, reception, and display. In a selection of essays, fourteen distinguished scholars explore the universality of conditions of global migration and interdependence, inviting a rethinking of existing perspectives in postcolonial, transnational, and diaspora studies, and laying the foundation for empirical and theoretical directions beyond the terms of these traditional frameworks.

Brazilian Electric Guitar

"The main goal of this book is to present what could be called Brazilian guitar today, working melodically, harmonically and rhythmically in some of the most important Brazilian musical styles. .We have chosen to always use two electric guitars in these arrangements (but in the song "Violeiros e Cantadores",which is for solo electric guitar), so that the essential functions of the guitar – rhythm, melody and harmony – might beexpressed in the clearest and best way in each different style. We have made three versions of each piece, for ease of study: a complete one, one without the first electric guitar, and one without the second electric guitar. Therefore the student will be able to listen to the complete version and thenpractice with the other ones, playing the missing parts of the first guitar and the second guitar. At the end of the book, like an appendix, we have included the bass lines used in the recordings to strengthen the rhythmic and harmonic comprehension of each style."All music is in notation and tablature. A free recording of the music is available as an internet download.

MORE WATER LESS LAND NEW ARCHITECTURE

MORE WATER LESS LAND NEW ARCHITECTURE

Climate change, and the inevitability of sea level rise, will require much more of us than simply pulling back from the coastline. The thesis of Weston Wright's More Water Less Land New Architecture is that we need to start thinking in an entirely different way about the relationship of cities to waterfront sites and of the relationship of buildings to water, which means rethinking many of architecture's implicit premises. If architecture has been confrontational with water—think bold towers erected beside the sea, as if to dare the water to challenge them—Wright's argument is that we will need to be modest, accommodating, and accepting of the power and presence of water if our cities ar...

In the book, different thematic geographies are presented to explore the global scope of the c...

Álvaro Siza

Alvaro Siza (b.1933) is considered Portugal’s greatest living architect. His buildings are known for their austere beauty and their imaginative relationship to their surroundings. Relatively unknown outside his native Portugal when he won the 1992 Pritzker Prize, he has since built a number of masterful buildings around the world while retaining strong ties to his country. This volume highlights over 20 of these projects, approximately half of which are in Portugal. Each is explained in depth by author Carlos Castanheira as well as Siza himself, and illustrated with photographs, complete sets of drawings, and a wealth of Siza’s sketches.

The texts presented in Proportion Harmonies and Identities (PHI) Time and Space were compiled to establish a multidisciplinary platform for presenting, interacting, and disseminating research. It also aims to foster awareness and discussion on Time and Space, focusing on different visions relevant to Architecture, Arts and Humanities, Design and Social Sciences, and its importance and benefits for the sense of identity, both individual and communal. The idea of Time and Space has been a powerful motor for development since the Western Early Modern Age. Its theoretical and practical foundations have become the working tools of scientists, philosophers, and artists, who seek strategies and policies to accelerate the development process in different contexts.
