Presenting the first English translation of Burle Marx's "depositions," this volume highlights the environmental advocacy of a preeminent Brazilian landscape architect who advised and challenged the country's military dictatorship.
In a world dominated by hyper-specialisation, there are few architects that inhabit multiple areas consistently through their career. Procter-Rihl is a multidisciplinary studio that navigates between architecture, furniture, product design, exhibition, and landscaping. Procter-Rihl believes that architecture should be culturally--and climate--responsive, engaging with its place but also challenging. Unlike a typical contextual approach, the work creates tension between the vernacular and a new aesthetic. These contradictions add a layer of complexity to the reading of the architecture. Spatially, the practice explores complex geometries, which create dynamic experiences. Diagonal juxtaposition or a simple shift, or stretching of, a traditional form can produce an illusion of greater space. In their furniture work the studio is known for light structure and transparent acrylic where cut edges define a form based on the drawn line. Architecture and Beyond: Procter-Rihl comprises four parts or actions: fold, perforate, float and weave. Each chapter illustrates the practice's design method and way of working, highlighting key elements in construction.
The global spread of uniform modes of production and cultural values has been accompanied by a dissemination of stereotypes of "modern" architecture styles almost everywhere around the globe. Paradoxically, the reverse process has also emerged: In some countries, the elites feel the necessity to counterbalance the "loss of identity" and defend their own cultures against the "intruding" forces of globalization. What started as a defensive notion has developed into a more progressive attempt to re-create what has allegedly been lost. This trend is being strongly expressed in discourses about architecture in countries of the South. Who are the actors feeling compelled to "construct" new identities? How are these new identities in architecture created in various parts of the world? And, which are the ingredients borrowed from various historical and ethnic traditions and other sources? These and other questions are discussed in five case studies from different parts of the world, written by renowned scholars from Brazil, Mexico, Egypt, India and Singapore.

Architecture of Brazil: 1900-1990 examines the processes that underpin modern Brazilian architecture under various influences and characterizes different understandings of modernity, evident in the chapter topics of this book. Accordingly, the author does not give overall preference to particular architects nor works, with the exception of a few specific works and architects, including Warchavchik, Niemeyer, Lucio Costa, and Vilanova Artigas.
