Alexander's Coins and Alexander's Image
Why another book on Alexander with more than 2,000 already in print? This publication presents a clear, up-to-date synthesis of the most recent research on the coinages of Alexander and his successors. While initially produced to accompany a new numismatic installation in the Greek gallery of Harvard University Art Museums' Arthur M. Sackler Museum and a Harvard course, the book is not strictly an exhibition catalog. Rather, it serves a broader purpose as a catalog for Harvard's Alexander and related coins, as well as a general introduction to coins, and specifically, to coins of the era. Of interest to collectors and cognoscenti, the book introduces ancient Greek coins and the development of portraiture on coins and also offers an overview of the complexity of the historical events and coinages from the time of Philip II of Macedon to the end of the Hellenistic monarchies in 31 BC. In a section on the afterlife of the image of Alexander, the author presents some original ideas on the Poros coinage and discusses some Baktrian coins, as well as Alexander's cult during the Roman Empire, particularly in relation to the Abu Qir medallions.

Sacred Founders
Diliana Angelova argues that from the time of Augustus through early Byzantium, a discourse of “sacred founders”—articulated in artwork, literature, imperial honors, and the built environment—helped legitimize the authority of the emperor and his family. The discourse coalesced around the central idea, bound to a myth of origins, that imperial men and women were sacred founders of the land, mirror images of the empire’s divine founders. When Constantine and his formidable mother Helena established a new capital for the Roman Empire, they initiated the Christian transformation of this discourse by brilliantly reformulating the founding myth. Over time, this transformation empowered imperial women, strengthened the cult of the Virgin Mary, fueled contests between church and state, and provoked an arresting synthesis of imperial and Christian art. Sacred Founders presents a bold interpretive framework that unearths deep continuities between the ancient and medieval worlds, recovers a forgotten transformation in female imperial power, and offers a striking reinterpretation of early Christian art.

Divine Accounting
A nuanced narrative about the intersections of religious and economic life in early Christianity The divine was an active participant in the economic spheres of the ancient Mediterranean world. Evidence demonstrates that gods and goddesses were represented as owning goods, holding accounts, and producing wealth through the mediation of religious and civic officials. This book argues that early Christ-followers also used financial language to articulate and imagine their relationship to the divine. Theo-economics--intertwined theological and economic logics in which divine and human beings regularly transact with one another--permeate the letters of Paul and other texts connected with Pauline communities. Unlike other studies, which treat the ancient economy and religion separately, Divine Accounting takes seriously the overlapping of themes such as poverty, labor, social status, suffering, cosmology, and eschatology in material evidence from the ancient Mediterranean and early Christian texts.
