Navigating the Nineteenth-Century Institution
This edited volume brings together a range of scholars working on both the New Poor Law and the history of asylums. At its core is the pauper voice and pauper experience which has, until recently, been underestimated. By using a wide variety of sources, this volume focuses on a number of themes, including the circulation of the poor and mad, blurred boundaries between the workhouse and asylum, pauper agency, dissent and defiance, the transfer of welfare ideas beyond the metropole, and personal or collective interpretations of the institution, either individually or by different groups. It locates the pauper voice through a range of lenses such as gender, illness, age, life-cycle, crisis, famine, vagrancy, dealings with local poor law officials, and mental health problems. In using this wide focus, it brings to the forefront of the discussion how the poor negotiated new legislation and a system that was fluid rather than fixed.
Financing the Landed Estate
While there is an extensive historiography which explores English agriculture in the nineteenth century, there has been less attention paid to individual estates and in particular the role of the land agent within their management, administration and participation in rural community relationships. Nowhere is this more obvious in the lack of research into the financial history of the landed estate, even though in the early nineteenth century these were some of the largest businesses in England. Family Life in Britain, 1650–1910
This book explores the ways that families were formed and re-formed, and held together and fractured, in Britain from the sixteenth to twentieth century. The chapters build upon the argument, developed in the 1990s and 2000s, that the nuclear family form, the bedrock of understandings of the structure and function of family and kinship units, provides a wholly inadequate lens through which to view the British family. Instead the volume's contributors point to families and households with porous boundaries, an endless capacity to reconstitute themselves, and an essential fluidity to both the form of families, and the family and kinship relationships that stood in the background. This book offers a re-reading, and reconsideration of the existing pillars of family history in Britain. It examines areas such as: Scottish kinship patterns, work patterns of kin in Post Office families, stepfamily relations, the role of family in managing lunatic patients, and the fluidity associated with a range of professional families in the nineteenth century. Disability Matters
This book explores how communities, stakeholder groups and policy makers have thought about people with mental and physical impairments between the nineteenth and twenty-first centuries. At a time when new thinking is desperately needed our book argues that this can only be delivered through a wider, more diverse and (above all) historically informed debate about the nature and meaning of mental and physical impairment. Bird Communities of Gambel Oak
Gambel oak (Quercus gambelii Nutt.) covers 3.75 million hectares (9.3 million acres) of the western United States. This report synthesizes current knowledge on the composition, structure, and habitat relationships of gambel oak avian communities. It lists life history attributes of 183 bird species documented from gambel oak habitats of the western United States. Structural habitat attributes important to bird-habitat relationships are identified, based on 12 independent studies. This report also highlights species of special concern, provides recommendations for monitoring, and gives suggestions for management and future research.
