A century ago, our country went through the flu pandemic. I have always wondered how people dealt with it. The generations before us never talked about their experiences then. Maybe we just didn't know how to ask, but during this pandemic we have just lived through, I kept a journal so that I would remember the things we saw, we heard, or we did. This publication, based on my journal, includes photos, illustrations, and is written in poetic format.
A special experience makes a memorable summer on the farm.
On August 21, 2017 the path of totality stretched across the United States from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean. My husband (John), son (Jeremy), and I drove north to Nebraska to be in the path of totality. Our destination lay east of Beatrice, Nebraska at Rockford Lake. Upon arrival, our challenges began. Would we meet those challenges? Would we find a cloudless spot? Would we see the moon come between the earth and cast its shadow over us to create solar totality?
Rumblings heard deep in the icecap with its melting ice causes problems for those living at the North Pole.
'Twas the night before Christmas . . . but there's no snow and Santa wears a Hawaiian malo around his waist! The latest in Pelican's Night Before Christmas series, this island tale is sure to enchant readers with its tropical twist on the Clement C. Moore classic. Hawaiian Night Before Christmas written and illustrated by Carolyn Macy, is a delightful book for children of all ages. It's Christmas Eve and Mama, Papa, and the keiki (children) have decorated a coconut tree, placed the lauhala (woven baskets) on the porch, and left a snack for Santa, or Kanakaloka, to enjoy. The book details Hawaiian Christmas traditions as the story unfolds. Not a gecko was stirring as Santa Claus comes out of the night, not in a wintry sleigh but an outrigger canoe pulled by eight strong sea turtles. Complete with a glossary of Hawaiian terms, this vividly illustrated celebration of Christmas Hawaiian-style is an enchanting journey to a lush tropical paradise just in time for the Holiday gift-giving and gift-guide season.
Soon after takeoff from LaGuardia Airport in New York, a flock of geese flew into Captain Sullenberger's plane and shut down its engines. This happened one cold afternoon on January 15, 2009. With one hundred fifty-five people aboard Flight 1549, the plane began to lose altitude. Unable to reach LaGuardia or Teterboro Airports in time, and without the power of his engines, would Captain Sully be able to land his plane safely? Where would he find a place close enough to land? Find out in Miracle on the Hudson.

James was beginning to see the similarity to what was occurring on Earth. Now, from what Carolyn and Pierre were telling him he could see that those people concerned for the wellbeing of such creatures as Elephants, Lions and Tigers were signaling the start of a potentially huge problem for Earths wildlife.

This story tells about one of my favorite childhood experiences. Every year our cousins would spend part of the summer with us. Since we lived on a farm, we had a large world to explore with our play limited to our imagination. Stopping our play only lasted long enough to help with work around the place. This time in the 1950's also saw many first in our nation when television and space began to play an importance in our lives. Then one afternoon as we played, we had a surprise which made this summer A Special Christmas in July!
