A Taste of Italy

“A well-balanced, deliciously presented cookbook.” —Shelf Awareness The Italian-born, up-and-coming cooking show celebrity brings his passion for Tuscan food to the American table. This beautifully photographed cookbook is alive with vibrant, soul-satisfying food! Growing up in Lucca, Italy, chef Damiano Carrara learned how to cook, not only from his mother and grandmother, but also from his father. Here, he brings those dishes from his family’s table to yours—including his father’s tried-and-true recipe for homemade gnocci with pesto. His comforting, delicious recipes range from Pasta e Fagioli (Pasta and Bean Soup) and Insalata di Farro con Gamberi (Farro Salad with Shrimp) to Finocchi Gratinati (Fennel au Gratin), Lasagne Vegetariana ai Carciofini (Vegetarian Baby Artichoke Lasagna), and Panna Cotta scattered with fresh berries or shaved dark chocolate. This is authentic Italian home-style cooking at its best.

Rectal Cancer

Despite lifestyle improvements, the incidence of rectal cancer is increasing in industrialised countries. Rapid advances in technology, growing knowledge of the biological history of the disease and closer attention to patients' quality of life after surgery have led to a less invasive approach. In the last 15 years, the surgical approach has shifted from extended resection to sphincter-saving procedures, featuring a multidisciplinary approach and a high level of specialisation. The experienced surgeon can plan and choose the "right treatment for the right patient" only with the support of the radiologist, endoscopist and pathologist (preoperative staging), oncologist and radiotherapist (neo...

Global Heritage Stone

This Special Publication is dedicated to heritage stone: those natural stones that have special significance in human culture. Some stones that have had important uses in the past are now neglected because they are no longer extracted. Others are still commercially important, but their heritage uses have not been well documented in widely available sources. The Heritage Stone Task Group of the International Union of Geological Sciences is working to establish a new formal designation of ‘Global Heritage Stone Resource’ to recognize those stones that have had internationally significant architectural and ornamental uses. The aim is to spread awareness of the cultural heritage aspects of these stones, to help to encourage continued supply for maintenance and repair of important monuments and to preserve historically important quarries. The aim is neither to promote nor to limit these stones for new construction: in some cases continuing commercial use might help to ensure future supplies for building conservation purposes.
