Cascabel

The wide-open Western Frontier in 1865 paints the backdrop for murder and revenge. A young man's manic need to avenge the deaths of his family is aided by an Apache woman warrior. Skilled in the art of war and killing, she becomes his teacher and lover. Murderers seek the anonymity of droving cattle and become prey; catacombs hide the bodies of the wrongdoers. A man's mind can become ingenious when he begins sinking into insanity. Filled with venom, he becomes El Cascabel; the rattlesnake! "M. A. Hutchison crafts a suspenseful tale of a young man's descent into murderous madness in the Old West, weaving a rich tapestry of love, loss, and vengeance amid the desert's stark beauty. This is a twisting ride the reader won't soon forget." Jude Johnson, Author of "Cactus Cymry" & "Dragon & Hawk"

The action starts in Sacramento in 1867. The Cascabels are a French family of circus artists who spent several years touring the United States and plan to return home. Their savings get stolen so the family cannot afford the ship ticket. Instead, Caesar Cascabel decides to travel overland, via Alaska and Bering Straits, through Siberia and Central Russia with their horse-drawn carriage, the Belle-Roulotte (the Fair Rambler). They don't expect dangers to happen. On their way, they rescue at the Alaskan border, with the help of native girl Kayette, a Russian political fugitive, count Narkine, whom they bring along so that he can see again his father in Russia. Count Narkine adopts Kayette as his daughter. In Sitka, the group witnesses the transfer of Alaska to the United States. On their way from Port Clarence the travellers unfortunately end up on a floating iceberg that drifts to the Lyakhovsky Islands in Arctic Ocean. There they are captured by the natives. Other troubles, including political ones, occur but Cascabels manage to get through Ural to Perm and then, easily, to France.

Jules Verne (1828-1905) was a French novelist, poet, and playwright. Most famous for his novel sequence, the Voyages Extraordinaires, Verne also wrote assorted short stories, plays, miscellaneous novels, essays, and poetry. His works are notable for their profound influence on science fiction and on surrealism, their innovative use of modernist literary techniques such as self-reflexivity, and their complex combination of positivist and romantic ideologies.Csar Cascabel(with over 80 illustrations)The Voyages extraordinairesBook #35 The action starts in Sacramento in 1867.

Excerpt from Caesar Cascabel "Has nobody got any more coppers to give me? Come, children, search your pockets!" "Here you are, father!" replied the little girl. And she drew out of her pocket a square-cut piece of greenish paper, all crumpled and greasy. This paper bore the almost illegible inscription "United States Fractional Currency," encircling the respectable-looking head of a gentleman in a frock-coat, and likewise the figure 10 repeated six times, - which represented ten cents, say about ten French sous. "How did you come by that?" inquired the mother. "It's the remnant of the takings at the last performance," answered Napoleona. "Gave me everything, Sander?" "Yes, father." "Nothing ...
