Agroecology in Policy and Practice
In the past years, there has been steady growth in work relating to agroecology. People-centred, knowledge-intensive and rooted to sustainability, it is now well established that agroecology matches the transformative approach called for by the 2030 Agenda; a transition to sustainable food and agriculture systems that ensures food security and nutrition for all, provides social and economic equity, and conserves biodiversity and the ecosystem services on which agriculture depends. Although not a new concept, agroecology is today gaining interest worldwide among a wide range of actors as an effective answer to climate change and the interrelated challenges facing food systems, finding expression in the practices of food producers, in grassroots social processes for sustainability and the public policies of many countries around the world.
The State of Food and Agriculture 2007
International food aid has rightly been credited with saving millions of lives and is often the only thing that stands between vulnerable people and death. However, it was a serious obstacle in the Doha Round of multilateral trade negotiations and has been sharply criticised as a donor-driven response that creates dependency on the part of recipients and undermines local agricultural producers and traders upon whom sustainable food security depends. This issue of the 'State of Food and Agriculture' report examines the issues and controversies surrounding international food aid, particularly in crisis situations. It considers the ways in which food aid can support sustainable improvements in food security, in order to preserve its essential humanitarian role whilst minimising the possibility of harmful secondary impacts.

The Future is an Ancient Lake
This art book contains over 350 color photographs by Marzio Marzot, documenting information on traditional food production systems, scientific details and notes from a journey through one of the world' s outstanding region: the Lake Chad Basin in Africa. It provides an insight into the life and customs of the local farmers, fishermen and pastoralists who foster, maintain and utilize biodiversity in their traditional agricultural systems, thereby deploying the knowledge and techniques that they have accumulated over many centuries. FAO promotes the sharing of experiences and awareness related to the role of rural people in conserving and sustainably using agricultural biodiversity. Building on the local knowledge and social organization of farmers is indispensable. The images in this book are a tribute to the knowledge and work of farmers and their care for the land.
GARDENS of BIODIVERSITY
This book does not claim to offer a definitive prescription for sustainable agriculture and is not an exhaustive study. It puts forth a collection of concrete examples showing how genetic resources are maintained and used by small farmers for food security in the Southern Caucasus. These examples show that the livelihoods and prospects of rural people can be improved and consolidated in a sustainable manner to face important environmental, social and economic challenges without sacrificing the prosperity of future generations. The book would like to stimulate further debate, research and policies in the hope that bridges can be built between the sustainable use of biodiversity and genetic resources, traditional practices and ways of life, and the new technologies, demands and challenges of today’s society.
