Summary of Laura Vanderkam's Off the Clock

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The author, Robert Kauffman, was a school principal for 21 years. He found that the most important thing he did was not done, and that was to spend time with his best teachers and help those who needed it. #2 After tracking his time, Kauffman was able to see where he was spending his time and make adjustments. He was spending 51 percent of his time on instructional leadership, which had a positive impact on the students of Hillside. #3 Tracking and monitoring your time can lead to a surprising mental lightening. It can upgrade your life all the way around, allowing you to be more effective at school and with your family. #4 The discipline of tracking your time and minding your hours changes the experience of time. It can lead to a savored life. As the Buddhist monk and meditation teacher Bhante Henepola Gunaratana writes in his book Beyond Mindfulness in Plain English, Mindfulness gives you time. Time gives you choices. Choices, skillfully made, lead to freedom.

The author argues that bingo can provide new insight into three areas of political economy: more-than-capitalist' economies; the role of regulation in shaping those economies; and the gendered nature of that regulation.

Cherryville

Cherryville, originally called White Pine, was renamed for the cherry trees lining the Old Post Road leading into town. It is located in the rolling hills of the Carolina Piedmont. The village was spun from the wilderness during the mid-1700s, when Scots-Irish and German immigrants settled the area around Beaver Dam and Indian Creeks. These settlers brought with them their languages, religions, music, and customs. The German tradition of shooting in the New Year with muskets and black powder continues today after 250 years. The area was a hotbed of Tory activity during the Revolutionary War, with Col. John Moore, the notorious Tory who was defeated at the Battle of Ramseurs Mill, living on Indian Creek. With the advent of the railroad in the 1860s, the first cotton mill in 1891, and the international firm of Carolina Freight Carriers Corporation in 1932, Cherryville has grown into a sophisticated, modern town.

"I well recall a conversation with an executive I hoped to interview about her astonishing productivity. I began our call with an assurance that I would not take much of her time. She laughed. 'Oh, I have all the time in the world,' she said." Most of us feel constantly behind, unsure how to escape feeling oppressed by busyness. Laura Vanderkam, unlike other time-management gurus, believes that in order to get more done, we must first feel like we have all the time in the world. Think about it: why haven't you trained for that 5K or read War and Peace? Probably because you feel beaten down by all the time you don't seem to have. In this book, Vanderkam reveals the seven counterintuitive prin...
