Bagan and the World
The archaeological site of Bagan and the kingdom which bore its name contains one of the greatest concentrations of ancient architecture and art in Asia. Much of what is visible today consists of ruins of Buddhist monasteries. While these monuments are a major tourist attraction, recent advances in archaeology and textual history have added considerable new understanding of this kingdom, which flourished between the 11th and 14th centuries. Bagan was not an isolated monastic site; its inhabitants participated actively in networks of Buddhist religious activity and commerce, abetted by the site’s location near the junction where South Asia, China and Southeast Asia meet. This volume presents the result of recent research by scholars from around the world, including indigenous Myanmar people, whose work deserves to be known among the international community. This publication is composed of papers presented at an International Symposium on Athalassic (Inland) Salt Lakes, which was hosted by the University of Adelaide, South Australia, during a week in October 1979. The genesis of the Symposium was at the Copenhagen Congress of the International Association of Limnology (S.1. L.) where it was noted that a number of papers concerned with inland saline lakes were distributed throughout sessions in such a way as to make it difficult to attend all of them. A number of participants at the Congress felt that the ecology of salt lakes had greater homogeneity or cohesiveness than this sort of distribution would suggest, and it was decided that a symposium...

Rotifera VIII: A Comparative Approach is a record of the proceedings of the VIIIth International Rotifer Symposium which was held in Collegeville, Minnesota, USA, on June 22-27, 1997. It contains review papers and reports of recent research findings along with the presentation of new methods in rotifer biology. The publications contained in this volume reflect the wide diversity of approaches, methods of analysis and conclusions that characterize research on the Rotifera. Some of the topics addressed are: rotifer distribution, responses to biotic and abiotic factors, genetic profile of individuals and populations, rotifer feeding and mating behavior, morphology, phylogeny and taxonomy.
