Dutch Dikes
The Netherlands has many thousands of dikes. Dikes are the conveyors of our landscape, and have great cultural-historical value. We live in dike houses on the Waalbanddijk, cycle along the meandering Omringdijk in West Friesland, or visit the monument on the Afsluitdijk. Nevertheless, quite a few of the dikes fail to meet current safety standards. In order to guarantee our safety, knowledge about dikes is therefore necessary. It is time for an overview as well as a look towards the future, in a standard work. Despite their importance to our history, economy, culture, and nature, our dikes have never been properly mapped out. This is remarkable, because without dikes, the Netherlands would never have existed; they are our most important invention. In this book, based on the first Dike Map of the Netherlands, the Dutch dikes will for the first time be described, interpreted, and portrayed in their entirety: from primary embankment to relict, from seawall to waterline dike, and from dreamer dike to watchman dike. The list of the top 100 dikes shows the most remarkable dikes of the Netherlands.

De-/signing the Urban
This book represents the fruits of a year long forum carried out in the Delft School of Design (Faculty of Architecture, University of Technology Delft). The papers in this collection are gathered from renowned visiting scholars, faculty members, and doctoral candidates who contributed to workshops, seminars and lectures. IABR-2014
The catalog of the 6th edition of the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam contains a detailed description of the exhibition URBAN BY NATURE- and of all of the projects that are part of it. Dirk Sijmons contributes an introduction to the theme and introduces the different sections of the exhibition. The work process and results of the three IABR-Project Ateliers are highlighted. Other contributions are by Ahmed Aboutaleb, Yves de Boer, George Brugmans, Johan van de Gronden, Maarten Hajer, Eric Hercules, Henk Ovink, Jelle Reumer, Piet Vollaard and Charles Waldheim.

Water management runs in the blood of the Dutch. Draining the Netherlands and keeping it dry is a process they started centuries ago and continue to this day. But will this still suffice? In the project Sweet & Salt (book and exhibition) author and journalist Tracy Metz and curator Maartje van den Heuvel demonstrate, in text and images, how the Netherlands shapes its evolving relationship with water. The sea level is rising, rivers are swelling, there is more rain, there are more storms and sometimes there's a drought. There is a growing awareness that not just dikes and dams but natural processes too play a significant role in our security. This is the greatest challenge currently facing Dutch designers.
