The Obsolescence of the European Neighbourhood Policy
The idealism that engendered the European Neighbourhood Policy in 2004, later codified in the Lisbon Treaty in 2009, has since been reviewed to adapt to the turbulence that has befallen the EU and its neighbourhood. The ENP is now little more than an elegantly crafted fig leaf that purports to take a soft power approach to the EU’s outer periphery, argues the author, but in effect it inclines more towards Realpolitik. By prioritising security interests over liberal values in increasingly transactional partnerships, the EU is atomising relations with its neighbouring countries. And without the political will and a strategic vision to guide relations with the neighbours of the EU’s neighbours, the ENP remains in suspended animation.

Irregular Migration, Trafficking and Smuggling of Human Beings
The expert contributors to this edited volume, representing a multidisciplinary selection of academics, examine the treatment of irregular migration, human trafficking, and smuggling in EU law and policy. The various chapters explore the policy dilemmas encountered in efforts to criminalize irregular migration and humanitarian assistance to irregular immigrants. The book aims to provide academic input to informed policy-making in the next phase of the European Agenda on Migration. How the EU Really Works

Between Autonomy and Dependence
The European Union is traditionally seen as a new and partly separate legal order within the global legal system. At the same time, the EU is an important player in the global governance network. Social Benefits and Migration
This book examines the main policy controversies that have emerged in the European Union over migration and its impact on the welfare system. Does migration constitute a disproportionate burden to member states' domestic labor markets and welfare systems? Should noncitizens be entitled to social benefits in the state where they live? Is there objective evidence and statistical data indicating abuse of social benefits by noncitizens, social welfare tourism, or the welfare magnet hypothesis, in which migrants are attracted to countries that provide more generous welfare? The contributors analyze these controversies as they affect different categories of noncitizens in the framework of EU law and policy. They also examine the uses or misuses of data, information, and social science knowledge in the debates over the reliance by noncitizens on social benefits. The book concludes with a set of recommendations addressed to EU policymakers.
Migration, Borders and Asylum
What level of policy convergence has been achieved by EU member states on immigration, borders and asylum? Although this question may sound rather theoretical, in practice it has profound consequences on the everyday life of individuals and the very nature of the EU. Common action in this field is exacerbated by the significant obstacles that negatively impact the quality of policies and the success of their implementation. Together with the tense EU struggle between the intergovernmental and community method of governing, these factors are detrimental to an EU-wide policy for promoting freedom, justice and stability in an enlarging Union. They investigate persistent barriers to harmonisation and suggest how the EU may achieve policy optimalisation.
