Ai Weiwei

  • Categories: Art

Over the past two decades, the Chinese conceptual artist, activist and exile Ai Weiwei has created art that addresses complex and sensitive themes of political, ethical, and social urgency. His artworks, which call upon both Western and Chinese cultural traditions, are deeply engaged with the history of art, drawing particularly on conceptualism and minimalism. From the start of his multifaceted career in the late 1970s, Ai has envisioned artistic practice as a deeply human, moral, and political endeavour. This volume presents the artist's work in dialogue with theoretical texts by the Italian philosopher Giorgio Agamben and the German-Jewish philosopher Hannah Arendt alongside interpretive essays that illuminate the artist's work on human rights, his engagement with historical Chinese artifacts, and his critical consideration of the effects of globalisation.

Ten Thousand Things

  • Categories: Art

An incomparable look at how Chinese artists have used mass production to assemble exquisite objects from standardized parts Chinese workers in the third century BC created seven thousand life-sized terracotta soldiers to guard the tomb of the First Emperor. In the eleventh century AD, Chinese builders constructed a pagoda from as many as thirty thousand separately carved wooden pieces. As these examples show, throughout history, Chinese artisans have produced works of art in astonishing quantities, and have done so without sacrificing quality, affordability, or speed of manufacture. In this book, Lothar Ledderose takes us on a remarkable tour of Chinese art and culture to explain how artists used complex systems of mass production to assemble extraordinary objects from standardized parts or modules. He reveals how these systems have deep roots in Chinese thought and reflect characteristically Chinese modes of social organization. Combining invaluable aesthetic and cultural insights with a rich variety of illustrations, Ten Thousand Things make a profound statement about Chinese art and society.

Wu Jian'an The Heaven of Nine Levels is the catalog of Wu Jian'an's second exhibition at Chambers Fine Art. The wild imagery that characterized his first series of paper cuts achieves even greater complexity in the new works executed in carved ox- hide and laser cut brass. In a conversation with Yan An, Wu gives a lively account of his obsession with classical legends, the source of the imagery in much of his work, and of the technical difficulties he needed to overcome. The catalog also includes an essay on Wu's work by Yan An. Text in English and Chinese.
