Most studies of the interwar years have focussed upon literary elites, rendering that past and its literature in almost exclusively male terms. In Forever England Alison Light argues that we cannot make sense of Englishness in the period, or understand the changes within literary culture, unless we recognise the extent to which the female population represented the nation between the wars. From the traumatic aftermath of the First World War, Forever England traces the making of a conservative national temperament which could be defensive and protective, yet modernising in outlook. In a series of literary anaylses, the author suggests some of the tones and accents of this new version of Engli...

In the Process of Becoming

With their insistence that form is a dialectical process in the music of Beethoven, Theodor Adorno and Carl Dahlhaus emerge as the guardians of a long-standing critical tradition in which Hegelian concepts have been brought to bear on the question of musical form. Janet Schmalfeldt's ground-breaking account of the development of this Beethoven-Hegelian tradition restores to the term "form" some of its philosophical associations in the early nineteenth century, when profound cultural changes were yielding new relationships between composers and their listeners, and when music itself-in particular, instrumental music-became a topic for renewed philosophical investigation. Precedents for Adorno...

Perdurabo, Revised and Expanded Edition

A rigorously researched biography of the founder of modern magick, as well as a study of the occult, sexuality, Eastern religion, and more The name “Aleister Crowley” instantly conjures visions of diabolic ceremonies and orgiastic indulgences—and while the sardonic Crowley would perhaps be the last to challenge such a view, he was also much more than “the Beast,” as this authoritative biography shows. Perdurabo—entitled after the magical name Crowley chose when inducted into the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn—traces Crowley’s remarkable journey from his birth as the only son of a wealthy lay preacher to his death in a boarding house as the world’s foremost authority on m...

Charlotte Brontë and the Storyteller's Audience

This intelligent study offers a new and appreciative understanding of Charlotte Bronte as a narrative artist. With care and precision, Bock counters the prevailing view of Bronte's fiction as unconsciously confessional, clearly showing her persistent concern with the reader's collaborative role in the storytelling experience. Bock begins with an examination of the creative milieu at Haworth, where Bronte initially gained an understanding of her craft, and continues with a look at Bronte's relationship with her first audience, Branwell, Emily, and Anne, as well as the influence of her early readings in Scott, Byron, and Blackwood's Magazine. Bronte's juvenile tales are used to describe the mo...

Advanced Schenkerian Analysis: Perspectives on Phrase Rhythm, Motive, and Form is a textbook for students with some background in Schenkerian theory. It begins with an overview of Schenker's theories, then progresses systematically from the phrase and their various combinations to longer and more complex works. Unlike other texts on this subject, Advanced Schenkerian Analysis combines the study of multi-level pitch organization with that of phrase rhythm (the interaction of phrase and hypermeter), motivic repetition at different structural levels, and form. It also contains analytic graphs of several extended movements, separate works, and songs. A separate Instructor’s Manual provides additional advice and solutions (graphs) of all recommended assignments.
