The Panther on Cold Mountain and Other Stories
As you read the stories in this book, take into account that the writer does not consider himself an author or a writer. He does think that he is a "storyteller" as were most all of the people who lived in the mountains of Western North Carolina before, during, and after the Great Depression of the 1930s. The younger generation who came along after WW II were not exposed to these storytellers and have no idea of what life was like during what we old-timers like to call "the good old days."I tell these stories to make the younger generation of today aware of the hardships we older people faced in getting to this point in our lives. What you read in these stories is a part of what aunts, uncles, grandpas, grandmas, and all the others not having all the modern things we have today experienced. If I did not record these events of my life, they would be lost forever. My hope is that, in reading my stories, young people will learn about the past and that older people will refresh their memories of, "the good old days." Charles C. Fletcher

Charles Fletcher Lummis began his spectacular career in 1884 by walking from Ohio to start a new job at the three-year old Los Angeles Times. Out West and Back
The short stories that are in this book, Out West and Back, are my way of informing my children, my grandchildren and everyone that does not know about the way of life during the late a20s and early a30s. These were the Great Depression years. These stories tell of the ways that we worked, played, had fun, and the other events of our growing up. All of this was written from the memories of the author, who is eighty-five years old, and from true experiences of his life. This book, Out West and Back, was written for the whole family to enjoy.

Little Sam Mountain
Little Sam Mountain follows the life of John Dowdy as he grows up in the mountains of Western North Carolina during the Great Depression. The novel follows Dowdy as he leaves his sweetheart Sarah and his family to go to Europe to fight the enemy. When he returns after the war and sees the dramatic changes that have occurred, he is forced to reassess his plans for a life on Little Sam Mountain.
