Charles Coates (Coat, Coote) was born about 1793 in northern England, the son of Ralph and Sarah Coates. He immigrated to Brigus, Newfoundland in 1812. He was married in 1825 to Susanna Roberts, the daughter of James and Mary (Antle) Roberts. Descendants and relatives lived in Newfoundland, Massachusetts, California, and elsewhere.
