Quality of Pupil Learning Experiences

Very little is known about the quality of the learning experiences provided for pupils. This book contains the results of a major research project, conducted in a sample of English primary schools, in which particular attention was paid to the tasks children were assigned, to the degree of match between assigned tasks and pupil attainment, to the detailed observation of children at work. The teacher's problems in assigning work appropriate to children's attainments and the special problem of matching posed by the transfer of children from one class to another were also subjected to analysis. Lessons learned from the project were used as a basis for the design of an in-service course for teachers. The course, which was aimed at improving teachers' matching skills was closely evaluated. The report contains data and analysis pertinent to each of the above issues. The findings reveal that despite the conscientious efforts of able teachers a number of serious issues are apparent - particularly in areas such as classroom organization and teacher diagnosis of children's work.

Computers are not often associated with passion or culture, yet the use of information technology still has a surprisingly emotional effect on many people, including teachers and learners. This emotion may be anything from excitement and enthusiasm to anger or a sense of threat. Often, this strongly emotional response can prevent us from learning how to use IT effectively as a tool for learning. This book explores how IT can make a real difference to the quality of learning. Its approach takes account of some of the cultural, sociological and psychological factors, which influence how IT is used. The chapters are arranged in three parts. Part One explores the potential of IT as one of many tools which can influence the quality and experience of learning. Part Two looks at how teachers' professional development can help them to use IT effectively in the classroom. Part Three examines strategies for co-ordinating and managing IT development across a whole school or department. Whether you class yourself as technophile or technophobe, this book will show you how you can use IT more effectively in teaching and learning.

The Initial Teacher Training National Curriculum says that student teachers should be trained to analyse pupil's errors in maths and act accordingly. This is the only book that supports teachers' analysis of mathematical errors and helps them predict potential problems and propose solutions for themselves. Written in an accessible style, Teaching Mathematics with Insight guides the primary and early years teacher, and the student teacher through a series of processes that will enable them to become more effective and enlightened teachers of early mathematics. The processes include: unravelling the complexities of a concept, for example subtraction, by considering its component parts and the knowledge required to acquire understanding; watching children work to observe common mistakes and analyse the underlying misconceptions; discussing the concepts with other adults.

This book was first published in 1979. The authors' examinePiaget’s Theory starting by considering and commenting on the kinds of question one must ask of a scientific theory. None of the questions demands an absolute answer. Theories are judged in some respects with reference to competing theories. In other respects they are judged against our sense of scientific progress. In subsequent chapters the authors’ look at Piaget's theory in detail with such issues in mind. They also endeavour to locate Piaget's theory in the context of other views of intellectual development. In that section we focus on the issue we first nominated, that is the problem of making choices about the kinds of question to ask and the kinds of data to select.
