Prostitution Policy in the Nordic Region

There is great interest internationally in the development of prostitution policies in the Nordic countries after Sweden, Norway and Iceland have introduced general bans against buying sex whilst selling sex remains legal. In addition, there is a partial ban against buying sex in Finland. This is a different approach from that of several other European countries, where we have seen a decriminalisation of third-party involvement in prostitution as well as to that of the USA which criminalises both the buying and selling of sexual services. Thus the Nordic countries are often treated as representatives of a 'Nordic model' of prostitution policies. In this book - the first on the subject - Skil...

Young People, Vulnerabilities and Prostitution/Sex for Compensation in the Nordic Countries: A Study of Knowledge, Social Initiatives and Legal Measures

What do we know about the extent of young people’s experiences of sex for compensation in the Nordic countries? Are such experiences addressed by social initiatives and how do legal measures affect them? This report is based on country studies focusing on knowledge about sex for compensation among young people in the Nordic countries. The five country studies show how research on the extent of, and the motivations and conditions for, young people selling sex in the Nordic countries is rather scarce and that there are few social initiatives that target young people specifically. The interviews with service providers and the literature reviewed point to individual vulnerabilities related to young people’s experiences of compensational sex. In order to develop preventive measures more knowledge on structural factors related to experiences of compensational sex is needed.

Sexuality, Human Rights, and Public Policy

Sexuality, Human Rights, and Public Policy explores the intersection of public policy, human rights, and sexuality as they relate to inclusion and exclusion across diverse cultural settings. It examines how knowledge is formed and experienced at the intersections of culture, sexuality, race, and other axes of identity. This volume engages an array of questions including how public policy shapes the conceptualization of sexuality and rights and by extension the phenomena of inclusion and exclusion in contemporary society across the world. By evaluating how public discourse is employed to re-inscribe differences of gender, sexuality, and rights of citizens, this book provides a comparative analysis of how these processes and dynamics resemble each other or differ cross-culturally. This book demonstrates that in the realm of sexualities, approached from the ideal of human rights as a predominantly Western notion is increasingly challenged by diverse views and new interpretations of human rights in non-Western societies such as Africa and the Middle East.

Global Care Work

Presenting empirical research on the lives of care workers, sex workers, au pairs, and their families, this anthology is a unique study of gender and migration. Written by researchers from Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden, the account brings the Nordic example to the international debate on how globalization affects and commercializes women's traditional work and analyzes the social and legal migration regulations. Uncovering some uncomfortable facts about new ethnic hierarchies, social class, and gender discrimination in these countries, this book is an essential read for those interested in migration, care work, and gender issues.

Pornography

Pornography has long proven a polarizing and vexing subject in legal and feminist debates. Women's social movements have fought ferociously against pornography since the 1970s, emphasizing its contribution to violence against women. At least two to four of ten young men consume it three times or more per week. The pornography industry exploits poor populations, who are multiply and intersectionally disadvantaged based on gender, race, or other vulnerabilities. A thorough analytical review of empirical studies using complementing methods demonstrates that using pornography substantially contributes to consumers becoming more sexually aggressive, on average desensitizing them and contributing ...

Narratives of Motherhood and Mothering in Fiction and Life Writing

This open access volume offers original essays on how motherhood and mothering are represented in contemporary fiction and life writing across several national contexts. Providing a broad range of perspectives in terms of geopolitical places, thematic concerns, and theoretical and interdisciplinary approaches, it demonstrates the significance of literary narratives for understanding and critiquing motherhood and mothering as social phenomena and subjective experiences. The chapters contextualize motherhood and mothering in terms of their particular national and cultural location and analyze narratives about mothers who are firmly placed in one national context, as well as those who are in â€...

In recent times where European welfare states are undergoing serious economic and social crises and being increasingly exposed to criticism, there has been a noticeable revival of feminist interest in the issues of equality. Focusing on a signature aspect of Scandinavian welfare states, Equality Struggles explores how gender equality and women’s rights are transforming the relationship between Scandinavian states and social actors. Indeed, drawing on in-depth analyses from fieldwork in Denmark, Norway and Sweden, this book examines the largest and most established women’s organizations and develops a multi-layered understanding of the entanglements between women’s movements, neoliberal markets and state political agendas in Scandinavia, as they give rise to feminist fractions and new feminist coalitions. Contributing to novel understandings of "equality struggles" within women’s organisations, this title will appeal to postgraduate students and scholars interested in fields such as Scandinavian Studies, Gender Studies, Political Science and International Relations and Social Theory.
