Studying Indian Cinema
This book traces the historical evolution of Indian cinema through a number of key decades. The book is made up of 14 chapters with each chapter focusing on one key film, the chosen films analysed in their wider social, political and historical context whilst a concerted engagement with various ideological strands that underpin each film is also evident. In addition to exploring the films in their wider contexts, the author analyses selected sequences through the conceptual framework common to both film and media studies. This includes a consideration of narrative, genre, representation, audience and mise-en-scene. The case studies run chronologically from Awaara (The Vagabond, 1951) to The Elements Trilogy: Water (2005) and include films by such key figures as Satyajit Ray (The Lonely Wife), Ritwick Ghatak (Cloud Capped Star), Yash Chopra (The Wall) and Mira Nair (Salaam Bombay!).
The Cinema of Satyajit Ray
Satyajit Ray is India's greatest filmmaker and his importance in the international world of cinema has long been recognised. WOMEN AND THEIR CONTEMPORARY TIMES IN RAY
By analyzing three works by Satyajit Ray (namely, Devi, Charulata, and Mahanagar), the current study attempts to investigate the state of Bengali women in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Women's social lives in the nineteenth century were marked by a period of transformation. Women were constrained to social disciplines in the first half of the century, whereas contemporary cinema depicted women's social upliftment. The twentieth century saw the birth of a new kind of woman: working women. Using film as an archive to investigate images of female subjectivity can be beneficial, particularly for feminist and gender academics looking for new ways to conceptualize women's everyday experiences in the past.
Being Bengali
Bengal has long been one of the key centres of civilisation and culture in the Indian subcontinent. However, Bengali identity – "Bengaliness" – is complicated by its long history of evolution, the fact that Bengal is now divided between India and Bangladesh, and by virtue of a very large international diaspora from both parts of Bengal. This book explores a wide range of issues connected with Bengali identity.
