This book proposes and defends the practice of urban gardening as an ecologically and socially beneficial, culturally innovative, morally appropriate, ethically uplifting, and politically incisive way for individuals and variously networked collectives to contribute to a successful management of some defining challenges of the Anthropocene – this new epoch in which no earthly place, form, entity, process, or system escapes the reach of human activity – including urban resilience and climate change.

Beginning in the 1920s, Kress and his foundation assembled, first in New York, and later in Washington, the nation's most inclusive collection of Italian art. In 1938 he decided to donate the collection to the National Gallery of Art, and when it opened in 1941, 375 paintings and 18 works of sculpture from the Kress gift were installed in the West Building. The Gallery's holdings of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Italian paintings have been enriched by gifts from P.A.B. Widener and Paul Mellon, and more recently from purchases. This catalogue is the first of four volumes to document the National Gallery's great collection of Italian paintings.

"It isn't easy to find an informed and critical look at the impact of digital media practices on human lives and minds. Ivo Quartiroli offers an informed critique based in both an understanding of technology and of human consciousness." --Howard Rheingold, author of The Virtual Community and Smart Mobs. Howard Rheingold, Derrick de Kerckhove, Arthur Kroker, Eric McLuhan, Michael McLuhan, Douglas Rushkoff, Michael Wesch, Hilarie Cash, Erik Davis, Michael Heim, Maggie Jackson, Ervin Laszlo and others on the forefront of technology and media studies praised The Digitally Divided Self as a milestone in the understanding of human nature in relationship with digital technology. Intersecting media studies, psychology and spirituality, The Digitally Divided Self exposes the nature of the malleable mind and explores the religious and philosophical influences which leave it obsessed with the incessant flow of information.

The Future of Investor-State Dispute Settlement

  • Categories: Law

What makes investor-State dispute settlement (ISDS) as dynamic a field as it is – especially in comparison with international commercial arbitration – is its uncanny ability to engage directly with the most topical and pressing issues of the day, including human rights, regulation of the energy sector, and climate change and the environment more generally. This book provides a deep dive into the reality behind the causes and effects of the expressed concerns regarding ISDS and the extent to which they can and have been addressed by ongoing reform processes at national, regional, and international levels. Deeply informed insights from leading scholars and practitioners on the status quo a...

The Last Italian

Drawing from a lifetime of writing about Italy, William Murray takes us off the beaten path to give us more than landmarks, more than art history, more than four-star restaurants and two-dimensional landscapes. He explores an Italy rarely seen: the terrain of her soul and geography of her character. Book jacket.
