Managing for Public Service Performance

How can management make a meaningful contribution to the performance of public services? Around the world, public organizations face increasingly complex social issues related to globalization, migration, health crises, national security, and climate change. To meet these challenges, we need a better understanding of what managing for public service performance means, and what it requires from public managers and public servants. This book takes a multidisciplinary, critical, and context-sensitive approach to address such questions. Through a comparative review of public administration research, it examines a variety of management aspects such as leadership behavior, human resource managemen...

The Special Issue “Technological Eco-Innovations for the Quality Control and the Decontamination of Polluted Waters and Soils” deals with the most recent research activities carried out at lab and field scale on eco-sustainable tools for the remediation of contaminated environmental substrates. It is particularly devoted to highlight the relevance of biological organisms (plants, microbes, algae) to assess the chemical contamination in water and soil and to remediate such matrices from the pollution caused by the human activities. Therefore, bioremediation is a primary focus of most of the articles published within the present Special Issue. Bioremediation is a promising environmentally ...

Environmental Chemistry and Recent Pollution Control Approaches

In recent years, there have been significant advances in the techniques of sampling and analysis, which has allowed the more accurate recording of environmental levels of many substances present in the environment. At the same time, processes for the remediation of contaminated matrices have evolved, through the application and/or combination of biological, physical, and chemical procedures. The purpose of this book is to present new studies aimed at determining levels of environmental pollution in various parts of the world. It also shows new alternatives for the remediation of contaminated matrices.

Athletes Pressing Charges

Athletes Pressing Charges explores the athlete-led protest movement in the Olympic sport of modern pentathlon. The athlete activists protest against the removal of the horse-riding discipline from the sport and blame the sport's governing body, the International Modern Pentathlon Union, for violating good governance principles and mismanagement. By taking the existing power imbalance between sport organizations and athletes as a starting point, this book argues that providing a voice to independent athletes affected by policy changes, is crucial to understand the ongoing issues in the sport. The protest movement is contextualized against the backdrop of increasingly stronger attempts by athletes from semi-professional Olympic sports to make their voices heard in decision-making processes. Therefore, this study has broader significance for the ongoing challenges by athletes and athletes-led organizations on powerful sport organizations
