Geostatistical Simulation

Geostatistical Simulation

This book deals with the estimation of natural resources using the Monte Carlo methodology. It includes a set of tools to describe the morphological, statistical and stereological properties of spatial random models. Furthermore, the author presents a wide range of spatial models, including random sets and functions, point processes and object populations applicable to the geosciences. The text is based on a series of courses given in the USA and Latin America to civil, mining and petroleum engineers as well as graduate students in statistics. It is the first book to discuss the geostatistical simulation techniques in such a specific way.

Geostatistical Simulations

When this two-day meeting was proposed, it was certainly not conceived as a celebration, much less as a party. However, on reflection, this might have been a wholly appropriate gesture because geostatistical simulation came of age this year: it is now 21 years since it was first proposed and implemented in the form of the turning bands method. The impetus for the original development was the mining industry, principally the problems encountered in mine planning and design based on smoothed estimates which did not reflect the degree of variability and detail present in the real, mined values. The sustained period of development over recent years has been driven by hydrocarbon applications. In...

Geostatistics Tróia '92

The contributions in this book were presented at the Fourth International Geostatistics Congress held in Tróia, Portugal, in September 1992. They provide a comprehensive account of the current state of the art of geostatistics, including recent theoretical developments and new applications. In particular, readers will find descriptions and applications of the more recent methods of stochastic simulation together with data integration techniques applied to the modelling of hydrocabon reservoirs. In other fields there are stationary and non-stationary geostatistical applications to geology, climatology, pollution control, soil science, hydrology and human sciences. The papers also provide an insight into new trends in geostatistics particularly the increasing interaction with many other scientific disciplines. This book is a significant reference work for practitioners of geostatistics both in academia and industry.

Space, Structure and Randomness

Space, structure, and randomness: these are the three key concepts underlying Georges Matheron’s scientific work. He first encountered them at the beginning of his career when working as a mining engineer, and then they resurfaced in fields ranging from meteorology to microscopy. What could these radically different types of applications possibly have in common? First, in each one only a single realisation of the phenomenon is available for study, but its features repeat themselves in space; second, the sampling pattern is rarely regular, and finally there are problems of change of scale. This volume is divided in three sections on random sets, geostatistics and mathematical morphology. Th...

Disorder and Mixing

CARGESE INSTITUfE ON DISORDER AND MIXING Convection, diffusion and reaction are the three basic mechanisms in physico-chemical hydrodynamics and chemical engineering. Both convective and diffusive processes are strongly influenced by the effect of disorder of granular matter in porous media, suspensions, fluidized beds or/and by the randomness caused in turbulent flow field. This book has been initiated by a NATO summer institute held in Cargese (Corsica, FRANCE) from June 15 th to 27 th 1987 . Its aim was to associate statistical physicists, fluid mechanicians and specialists of chemical engineering on the problems of the relation between disorder and mixing and, in this respect, this is a ...

Multicomputers and Image Processing: Algorithms and Programs is the second of a set presenting papers from the third meeting held in Madison, Wisconsin on May 27-30, 1981. The workshop explores the large and powerful multicomputer arrays and networks, with particular emphasis on the related aspects of developing algorithms and programs for multicomputer architectures. Separating 33 papers into chapters, this book reflects the three major aspects of the problem: user algorithms and programs; higher level languages; and multicomputer architectures. The first chapters present specific, larger structure, as well as whole program algorithms and their respective applications. Other chapters descri...

Mathematical Morphology

Mathematical Morphology allows for the analysis and processing of geometrical structures using techniques based on the fields of set theory, lattice theory, topology, and random functions. It is the basis of morphological image processing, and finds applications in fields including digital image processing (DSP), as well as areas for graphs, surface meshes, solids, and other spatial structures. This book presents an up-to-date treatment of mathematical morphology, based on the three pillars that made it an important field of theoretical work and practical application: a solid theoretical foundation, a large body of applications and an efficient implementation. The book is divided into five p...

Shape in Picture

The fields of image analysis, computer vision, and artificial intelligence all make use of descriptions of shape in grey-level images. Most existing algorithms for the automatic recognition and classification of particular shapes have been devel oped for specific purposes, with the result that these methods are often restricted in their application. The use of advanced and theoretically well-founded math ematical methods should lead to the construction of robust shape descriptors having more general application. Shape description can be regarded as a meeting point of vision research, mathematics, computing science, and the application fields of image analy sis, computer vision, and artificia...

This book contains the thoroughly refereed proceedings of the 12th International Symposium on Mathematical Morphology, ISMM 2015 held in Reykjavik, Iceland, in May 2015. The 62 revised full papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 72 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on evaluations and applications; hierarchies; color, multivalued and orientation fields; optimization, differential calculus and probabilities; topology and discrete geometry; and algorithms and implementation.
