Proceedings of the 50th Congress of the International Society for Applied Ethology
This book contains the abstracts of the presentations presented at the 50th annual meeting of the International Society for Applied Ethology (ISAE), held in Edinburgh, UK. The enduring aim of the ISAE is to encourage and support basic and applied research into the behaviour of animals as related to their use by humans. Ever since a small group of veterinarians first met in Edinburgh to form the Society of Veterinary Ethology (SVE), inspirational ethologists and veterinarians have helped shape the field of Applied Ethology. Scientists such as Niko Tinbergen, Karl Von Frisch and Konrad Lorenz, joint awardees of the 1973 Nobel Prize in physiology and medicine, have played an important part in helping to develop this subject. The 2016 ISAE conference will bring together applied ethologists from all over the world to share new discoveries and to discuss ways forward, under the general conference theme of 'Past and Future: Standing on the Shoulders of Giants'.

„Wie rund ist das ÖkoEi?“ – unter dieser Frage wurde sich im Rahmen der 21. Witzenhäuser Konferenz an der Universität Kassel/Witzenhausen mit den Herausforderungen der ökologischen Legehennenhaltung auseinander gesetzt. Den Auftakt bildeten zwei Vorträge zur ökologischen Geflügelhaltung in Niedersachsen. Das nächste Thema war „Haltung und Fütterung“. Die allgemeine Situation der ökologischen Legehennenhaltung in Deutschland wurde dargestellt und mit dem Nachbarland Österreich verglichen. Annäherungen an das Tier geschehen auf vielfältige Arten - zur großen Bandbreite der methodischen Zugänge allerdings besteht noch Forschungsbedarf. Vor diesem Hintergrund widmet sich der Band den Methoden natur- und geisteswissenschaftlicher Tierforschung. Aus Sicht der Tierzucht, der Nutztierethologie, der Mediävistik, der Theologie und der Philosophie sowie der Geschichte und Kunstgeschichte werden Methoden und Diskussionen rund um das Tier vorgestellt. Die Beiträge analysieren u.a. die Debatte um die Giraffe Marius, Jean-Henri Fabres Insektenbeobachtungen, räumliche Ordnungen von Menagerien und Zoos, Auswilderungsversuche sowie die Zuchtwertschätzung von Milchrindern und die Beobachtung von Milchkühen.
Stardom
In the past stars have been studied as cogs in a mass entertainment industry selling desires and ideologies. But since the 1970s, new approaches have reopened debate, as film and cultural studies try to account for the active role of the star in producing meanings, pleasures, and identites for a diversity of audiences. Stardom brings together for the first time some of the major writing of the last decade which seeks to understand the phemomenon of stars and stardom. Gathered under four headings - The System, Stars and Society, Performers and Signs, Desire and Politics - these essays represent a range of approaches drawn from film history, sociolgy, textual analysis, audience research, psychoanalysis, and cultural politics.
