Heinrich Friedrich Thier was born December 1, 1836 in Mühbrook, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. His parents were Friedrich Detlev Thier (b. 1812) and Dorothea Margarethe Rathje (1814-1895). He married Dorothea Christina Hamann (1844-1925) December 3, 1872 in Flemhude, Shleswig-Holstein. They had six children. Five of the children and their descendants have remained in Shleswig-Holstein. Their fifth child, Bernard (1883-1914), immigrated to the United States in 1901. Traces ancestors, descendants and relatives in Schleswig-Holstein, Iowa, Wisconsin, Colorado and elsewhere.
