Transitions and Dissolving Boundaries in the Fantastic
By creating hybrid zones of autonomy, the 'fantastic' - a subgenre of literary works - provides alternatives to conventional understandings of the world, knowledge, or identity. The fantastic raises a number of significant questions about cultural and social developments, and challenges existing boundaries. With regard to fantastic fiction in literature and different media representations, the articles in this volume explore: crossings into other worlds, time travel, metamorphoses, hybrid creatures, and a variety of other transitions and transgressions. The book analyzes hybrid genres, inter-media adaptations, transpositions into new media, as well as various forms of crossover as exemplified in the increasing trend of generation-spanning all-age literature. Tolkien as a Literary Artist
This book takes a fresh look at Tolkien’s literary artistry from the points of view of both linguistics and literary history, with the aim of shedding light on the literary techniques used in The Lord of the Rings. The authors study Tolkien’s use of words, style, narrative techniques, rhetoric and symbolism to highlight his status as literary artist. Dirk Siepmann uses a corpus stylistic approach to analyse Tolkien’s vocabulary and syntax, while Thomas Kullmann uses discourse theory, literary history and concepts of intertextuality to explore Tolkien’s literary techniques, relating them to the history of English fiction and poetry. Issues discussed include point of view, speeches, story-telling, landscape descriptions, the poems inserted into the body of the narrative, and the role of language in the characterization of the novel’s protagonists. Konflikt und soziale Identität
Diese interdisziplinäre Untersuchung verbindet eine empirische Studie zu einer heutigen Kirchengemeinde, die vor 20 Jahren einen Trennungskonflikt durchlebte, und exegetische Untersuchungen zum Matthäusevangelium. Die Rahmentheorie bildet der Social Identity Approach (SIA). Die explorative Studie zeigt auf, inwiefern Einsichten und Fragestellungen einer empirischen Untersuchung für das Verständnis des im Matthäusevangelium sichtbar werdenden Trennungskonflikts zwischen christusgläubigen Jüdinnen und Juden und der von Pharisäern geleiteten Synagoge fruchtbar gemacht werden können. Umgekehrt eröffnen sich von den gewonnenen exegetischen Einblicken aus auch neue Zugänge zu Konflikten in heutigen Kirchen bzw. Kirchengemeinden.

Die vorliegende Studie versucht, eine neue Perspektive auf das Genre Fantasy zu entwickeln und zugleich zu ergründen, inwieweit es eine spezifische Affinität zwischen der Fantasy und dem Medium Videospiel gibt. In Auseinandersetzung mit gängigen Zuschreibungen an das Genre – es sei politisch reaktionär und ästhetisch stumpfsinnig – wird eine transmediale Poetik der Fantasy entwickelt, die zugleich eine politische Einschätzung des Genres erlaubt. Ist 1968 gescheitert? Die Frage ist falsch gestellt. Die Ereignisse, die Bedeutung und die Auswirkungen von '68 lassen sich nicht in einem schlüssigen Narrativ fassen. Das Jahr beschreibt einen Kulminationspunkt, an dem höchst heterogene kulturelle, soziale und politische Phänomen in eine Interaktion zueinander treten, ohne ursächlich miteinander verbunden zu sein. Herzstück des Bandes ist ein Essay von Hermann Kappelhoff, der '68 aus der Analyse von Happenings, avantgardistischen Aktionen und Filmen heraus als Synonym für eine Form kultureller Gemeinschaftsbildung beschreibt; es markiert die Geburtsstunde der transnationalen Geschmacksgemeinschaft der westlichen Pop- und Jugendkultur. Dass sich der radikale kulturelle Wandel von '68 nur in seiner Heterogenität fassen lässt und die Logik des Happenings und des Widerspruchs zur poetischen Matrix des Kinos wird, zeigt ein Kaleidoskop aus Analysen von Filmen, die 1968 gezeigt wurden.
