Growth factor receptors have long been known to drive malignant transformation and cancer progression. The epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR, ErbB, HER) system is likely the best described membrane receptor tyrosine kinase family in malignant tumors. With implementation of the growth-inhibitory anti-HER-2 antibody trastuzumab (Herceptin) for the treatment of HER-2-positive advanced metastatic breast cancer, a new era has dawned in the therapy of this malignant disease. Unfortunately, trastuzumab-sensitive cancers invariably develop resistance to the antibody after some time. Recent clinical studies have revealed that these refractory tumors are still responsive to inhibition of the HER receptor family using dual HER-1/-2 inhibitors such as lapatinib (Tykerb/Tyverb). Moreover, a multiplicity of novel, improved irreversibly acting small molecular HER tyrosine kinase inhibitors are in the pipeline of many drug developing companies and are being evaluated in the clinical setting.
Receptor Tyrosine Kinase: Structure, Functions and Role in Human Disease, for the first time, systematically covers the shared structural and functional features of the RTK family. Receptor Tyrosine Kinases (RTKs) play critical roles in embryogenesis, normal physiology and several diseases. And over the last decade they have become the Number 1 targets of cancer drugs. To be able to conduct fundamental research or to attempt to develop pharmacological agents able to enhance or intercept them, it is essential first to understand the evolutionary origin of the 58 RTKs and their roles in invertebrates and in humans, as well as downstream signaling pathways. The assembly of chapters is written by experts and underscores commonalities between and among the RTKs. It is an ideal companion volume to The Receptor Tyrosine Kinase: Families and Subfamilies, which proceeds, family by family through all of the specific subfamilies of RTKs, along with their unique landmarks.

This volume constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-workshop proceedings of the 6th International Workshop on Fuzzy Logic and Applications held in September 2005. The 50 revised full papers and 32 short papers presented together with three invited papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 86 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on neuro-fuzzy systems, fuzzy logic and possibility theory, pattern recognition, evolutionary algorithms, control, bioinformatics, image processing, knowledge management, and miscellaneous applications.
Diagnosis breast cancer – now what? Suddenly everything has changed – the diagnosis breast cancer pulls the rugout from under thousands of women and increasingly many men as well. The first reactions are shock and fear. Many people have no idea how to cope with the strain that such a diagnosis brings with it. Along with the mountain of emotions which must be dealt with in such a situation, the patients find themselves challenged to take the right steps for receiving optimal treatment: turn to someone you can trust – but to whom? This book would like to guide patients and those close to them on their journey out of this disease. It is not only clear answers to all questions concerning diagnosis, finding and treatment that help, but also narratives from the experience of breast cancer patients and expert opinions of renowned researchers and physicians concerning the treatment and curing of breast cancer that give competent information.
Recent global and national debates have shown that demographic change, the rising incidence of chronic disease, and the unmet need for more personalized care are trends demanding a new, integrated approach to health and social care. The advancement and adoption of technology in both health and social care settings is a valuable tool for encouraging change and improving the quality and efficiency of care provided to patients and care clients.Achieving Effective Integrated E-Care Beyond the Silos presents a collection of real-life examples, frameworks, business models, financial implications, and methods of evaluating the technological tools that are enabling a more human-centered approach to health and social care. Based on relevant research in the field of integrated e-care, this publication is ideally designed for use by practitioners, researchers, and decision-makers in the care field.
