In this book the targets of drug action are the central focus - whether they be enzymes in a pathway or membrane-bound receptors and ion channels. This approach distinguishes the book from others in the f ield which consider the subject mainly in terms of disease.; The introductory chapter is concerned with the basic principles that cover enzyme inhibition and receptor binding by drugs. The next seven chapters deal with drugs that modulate biochemical pathways, both of synthesis and breakdown, while the last four chapters are concerned with organizational structures of the cell.; The book brings together the state of knowledge with respect to drug action and emphasizes mechanistic aspects of drug action. It encompasses the modes of action of drugs for infectious disease and those for endogenous conditions. There is a listing of reviews and essay questions are provided for each chapter.

Empire of Neglect

Empire of Neglect

Following the publication of Adam Smith’s The Wealth of Nations, nineteenth-century liberal economic thinkers insisted that a globally hegemonic Britain would profit only by abandoning the formal empire. British West Indians across the divides of race and class understood that, far from signaling an invitation to nationalist independence, this liberal economic discourse inaugurated a policy of imperial “neglect”—a way of ignoring the ties that obligated Britain to sustain the worlds of the empire’s distant fellow subjects. In Empire of Neglect Christopher Taylor examines this neglect’s cultural and literary ramifications, tracing how nineteenth-century British West Indians reoriented their affective, cultural, and political worlds toward the Americas as a response to the liberalization of the British Empire. Analyzing a wide array of sources, from plantation correspondence, political economy treatises, and novels to newspapers, socialist programs, and memoirs, Taylor shows how the Americas came to serve as a real and figurative site at which abandoned West Indians sought to imagine and invent postliberal forms of political subjecthood.

Sexual Crime and Intellectual Functioning

This book explores sexual crime and intellectual functioning. Drawing on expertise from clinical practice and applied research, the volume begins with an exploration of the theoretical and historical background to the interest in links between sexual offending and intellectual functioning. The authors then move on to discuss assessment of intellectual functioning in prison, interventions for low intellectual functioning, autistic spectrum and personality disorder. This book offers a rare insight into the phenomenon of high IQ and sexual offending, a much neglected aspect of the sexual crime literature, and includes novel research that unpacks this link. It further offers an extraordinary insight into the experiences of a person of superior IQ in the criminal justice system for a sexual offence. The book is relevant not only to psychologists, criminologists, social workers and students, but also to practitioners, researchers and the general public with an interest in learning about sexual offending and intellectual functioning.

It's been a strange week. Taelyn is a simple, solid young shepherd. On his own since the death of his parents four years ago, he enjoys the life he leads in the small, rural village of Byrkhill caring for his farm and sheep. The past week, however, has been filled with strange occurrences that disrupt the orderly world that Taelyn loves, but his troubles seem to be coming to an end, at least that's what he thinks until a crazy old man shows up on his hillside raving about gods and knights. With that inauspicious start, the easy life of the shepherd is turned upside down as the powers of both worlds swirl and converge around him. The end of the Great Game is in sight, and the pawns are on the move. The forces of all the gods, lawful, chaotic, good, and evil, seem to be focused on the young man and the magician sent to collect him for Bartleby, a god unknown by most scholars. How can the pair of mortals hope to survive in a game played by the gods? Law of the Land begind the sweeping story of The Scofflaw Series and the magical world where life and death, wars and peace, exist solely at the discretion of capricious gods.
