Stalking the A4 is Christopher Morgan's second not very big collection in more than thirty years, so he is not a prolific poet. Morgan only makes poetry when he has something to say-an occasional poet who does not manufacture occasions-and rejects more of his work than he publishes. I offer a closely connected reason why I have found him for many years one of the few contemporary poets who haunts me. He is the best practitioner of English verse I have read in our time. Especially in the twenty-first century it is not faint praise to call a writer a supreme master of the iambic pentameter, and Morgan's fluency in other forms is amazing. Who would notice before it is pointed out that the first of these poems has nineteen lines on only two rhymes? But Christopher Morgan should not be offered as a poets' poet, to be relished only by connoisseurs of verse: these poems are moving and often funny as well as having immediate appeal.

The Outrageous Fortune of Abel Morgan

Returning from the wars in Restoration Europe, Christopher Morgan looks to rebuild his life in England and escape the memory of his recently deceased wife - although looking into the eyes of his young son, Abel, Christopher cannot help but be reminded of what he has lost. Over time, father and son develop a strong bond as Christopher establishes community ties in the West Country, having bought a pub and inherited the previous owner's employees. However this relationship is callously torn apart when Abel is snatched by local ruffians and sold overseas. From the eastern shores of Constantinople to the western American isles, time and tide divide the two, and Christopher will sail far and wide to search for his missing son.

R. S. Thomas

This electronic version has been made available under a Creative Commons (BY-NC-ND) open access license. Christopher Morgan writes with keen critical insight on the controversial poet R. S. Thomas, considered to be one of the leading writers of the twentieth century. This is the first book to treat Thomas's entire oeuvre and will prove to be an indispensible guide and companion to the complete poems. The book is divided into three parts, each of which interprets the development of a major theme over Thomas's twenty-seven volumes, probing particular themes and particular poems with a meticulous insight. The book also treats Thomas's work as a complex and interrelated whole, as a body of work that comprises a single artistic achievement, and assesses that achievement within the context of an array of major literary figures from Montaigne to Seamus Heaney and Wallace Stevens. R. S. Thomas: Identity, environment, deity proves invaluable as a beginner's introduction to the Welsh poet, as a student's guide to critical thinking about the poet's work, and as a provocative new step in scholarly studies.
