OCEANOGRAPHY– Volume III

Oceanography is a component of Encyclopedia of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences in the global Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems (EOLSS), which is an integrated compendium of twenty one Encyclopedias. These volumes deal with the oceans as an integrated dynamic system, characterized by a delicate, complex system of interactions among the biota, the ocean boundaries with the solid earth and the atmosphere. This set of volumes is designed to be a very authoritative reference for state-of-the-art knowledge on the various aspects such as: Physical Oceanography, Chemistry of the oceans, Biological Oceanography, Geological oceanography, Coral Reefs as a Life Supporting System, Human Uses of the Oceans, Ocean Engineering, and Modeling the Ocean System from a Sustainable Development perspective. These volumes are aimed at the following five major target audiences: University and College students Educators, Professional practitioners, Research personnel and Policy analysts, managers, and decision makers and NGOs.

Opportunities to Improve Marine Forecasting

Opportunities to Improve Marine Forecasting

Commerce and the general publicâ€"especially those living in increasingly crowded, highly developed low-lying coastal communitiesâ€"rely heavily on accurate forecasts of marine conditions and weather over the oceans to ensure the safe and productive use of the sea and coastal zone. This book examines the opportunities to improve our ocean forecasting systems made possible by new observational techniques and high-speed computers. Significant benefits from these potential improvements are possible for transportation, ocean energy and resources development, fisheries and recreation, and coastal management.

Building Ocean Science Partnerships

Building Ocean Science Partnerships

Building Ocean Science Partnerships describes a set of potential ocean science projects for cooperative research between scientists from the United States and Mexico, particularly focused on the Pacific Coast of California and Baja California, the Gulf of California, and the Gulf of Mexico. Barriers to cooperation between scientists of the two nations are identified, and methods to overcome such barriers are recommended. The book describes how interactions can be promoted by enhancing opportunities for education and training, building and sharing scientific infrastructure, participating together in large-scale marine research programs and regional ocean observing systems, planning joint science events and publications, and developing sources of binational funding. Building Ocean Science Partnerships will be published in English and Spanish to make its contents widely accessible in the United States and Mexico.

Relationships Between Sea Surface Temperature and Nutrients in Satellite Detected Oceanic Fronts

Satellite IR images of the California coast off Point Sur reveal recurrent surface features which appear to be 'thermal discontinuities' associated with aperiodic upwelling events. Some of these have associated 'chemical fronts' and increased biological activity. Satellite IR imagery was used to locate 'discontinuities' and with in situ monitoring the development of three features were studied. Interrelationships between sea surface temperature nutrients and microplanktonic biomass were investigated. Nutrient ratios, satellite imagery, wind stress data and correlations between nutrients and temperature were used to develop an estimate of 'age' within a simplified upwelling 'life cycle' model...
