This is a new title from the Kenyan publisher who is publishing works of scholarship on the oral literature of the different groups in Kenya. The background is the rich repository in oral literature of the enduring wisdom and cultural values of the peoples of Africa. Ngecha is the monumental and intimate study of modernization and nationalization in rural Africa in the early years following Kenyan independence in 1963, as experienced by the people of Ngecha, a village outside Nairobi. This book aims to offer a broad history of theatre in Africa. The roots of African theatre are ancient and complex and lie in areas of community festival, seasonal rhythm and religious ritual, as well as in the work of popular entertainers and storytellers.
