A new idea can become an expensive flop for TV executives. So from the earliest days of television, the concept of a pilot episode seemed like a good idea. Trying out new actors; new situations and new concepts before making a series was good economical sense. It was also tax deductible. Sometimes these pilots were shown on television; sometimes they were so awful they were hidden from sight in archives; and sometimes they were excellent one-offs, but a series seemed elusive and never materialised. Chris Perry has always been fascinated by the pilot episode. So many pilots are made annually, but never seen by audiences. Only a handful appear on screen. It's a hidden world of comedy, variety, drama and factual programming. This volume attempts to lift the lid on the world of the TV pilot by revealing the many transmitted and untransmitted episodes made through the decades.

Witness

"A woman translates the stories of survivors of the war in the former Yugoslavia for a Swedish therapist. As the therapist seemingly grows ever more indifferent, the translator struggles to maintain her professional distance. Simply saying the words is not enough. She finds herself risking her job, her sense of perspective and even her sanity in order to connect with the people she encounters, and with one in particular. As she attempts to tell her own story, she can only do so through the stories she has translated for others." --Book Jacket.

London’s Statues and Monuments

The streets and public spaces of London are rich with statues and monuments commemorating the city's great figures and events – from Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square and Sir Christopher Wren's Great Fire Monument to the charming Peter Pan statue in Kensington Gardens, the range is glorious. Some commemorate events, while others celebrate people real or fictional; some take the form of small reliefs, while others are huge bronzes on pedestals, larger than life-size. Executed in stone, bronze and a range of other materials, London's statues and monuments include work by some of the world's greatest sculptors, and this book is a fully illustrated guide to the pieces and their stories: sometimes surprising and occasionally controversial, but always fascinating.
