Although fantasy and supernatural literature have long and celebrated histories, many critics contend that the fantastic and the supernatural have no place in the logical, rational, world of the detective story. This book is the first extensive study of the fantastic in detective fiction and it explores the highly debated question of whether detective fiction and the fantastic can comfortably coexist. The "locked room" mystery--which often uses the fantastic as a red herring to eventually be debunked by reason and logic--has long been among the most popular subgenres of detective fiction. This book also explores stories featuring almost supernaturally gifted detectives, stories where the supernatural is truly encountered, and stories with ambiguous endings. Close to 500 detective stories from 1841 to 2000, in which the fantastic or supernatural plays a central role, are discussed and analyzed. Although not all the stories are judged to be successful as detective tales, in the great majority, the fantastic enlivens the tale and deepens the mystery without weakening the detective elements.

Arthur Machen

Arthur Machen: Critical Essays offers a study of the works by Arthur Machen (1863-1947), the Welsh writer who has attracted a cult following for decades, especially among fans and scholars of weird fiction and Gothic studies. These essays take readers into different areas and address several topics in Machen's literary production: the literary, the artistic, the scientific, the religious, the socio-cultural, and the personal. The twelve chapters constituting the volume examine the representation of human beings in the writer's works and their relationship with the surrounding environment, whether it is the omnipresent London or the mysterious, menacing nature. The contributors also interpret Machen's writings through a series of disciplines and academic theories that were contemporary to the writer (such as paleontology and medicine) and demonstrate how he was influenced by the scientific discourses of his time and reproduced them in his works. The last section of the volume considers Machen's interest in the occult and mysticism and the religious themes present in many of his works.

First published in 1949, this business classic (written by two men experienced in sales and advertising) melded practical business sense with the ignition for business success: imagination. The examples may be historical, but the principles remain sound even today. Starting, establishing, marketing, developing, and maintaining a business all require the proper use of imaginative ideas to keep ahead of the competition. Even working your way up the ladder in someone else's business requires imagination. Woolf and Roth cover the basics of generating ideas, big and small, providing numerous examples of how individuals, even those starting with little or nothing, have had success.

He is watching hikers as they move through the forest and occasionally kidnaps children or murders solitary people who are in the woods. Childress starts at the beginning, telling the story behind an apparent bigfoot photo from the 1800s, and the tale of how the creature got its name in the 1950s. Bigfoot is present throughout the country, and Childress relates stories of sightings Back East, in the American Southwest, California and Pacific Northwest. He discusses bigfoot that make lots of noise, and presents photos throughout, including a special eight-page color photo section.

As a companion anthology to Flora Curiosa, Botanica Delira collects 21 short stories of botanical wonders and horrors, strange plants that delight and sometimes kill. These imaginative flowers and trees (and even one cactus) are a literary outgrowth of newspaper "wonder stories" that purported to describe rare natural marvels. To illustrate this "nature fakery," ten brief newspaper and magazine stories are included, showing the variety of early botanical literary hoaxes, from man-eating plants to electric trees.
