Over the centuries, philosophers and spiritual leaders who did not behave in a "virtuous" way or spoke too freely of their theories often had problems with survival: from Socrates to Plato, and then Osho, Krishnamurti, Mere, Kriyananda, all the way to the spiritual guide of Damanhur, Falco Tarassaco. On these pages, we recapitulate the events of a very Italian experience that started more than forty years ago: esoteric thought, creation of a Popolo Spirituale (Spiritual People), community life with transformations that have come about through alchemies that were not always easy, through Temples, art, alternative economy, Selfica technology, networks of organizations, and a complex social-political organization. Damanhur is like a crystal with many faces to discover, visiting or living there for shorter or longer periods of time.
Damanhur is one of the most structured communities in the world and its story contains so many initiatives and events that we should need a much bigger volume than this to tell them all. For that reason, in these pages we have condensed the following phases: the conception of the community project (1969 – 1979), its physical creation and subsequent consolidation (1980 – 1992), the period of rapid expansion (1993 – 2000), and the further growth that still continues, uninterrupted.
The philosophy and political system of the first forty years of Damanhur, Federation of Communities, is an original and unpredictable journey inspired by the participatory democracy of the Greek polis. Elected roles, responsibilities and human relations form a community that brings to life a new social model in continuous transformation. Now, in the new Millennium and in the land of Olivetti’s dream, Astronavi (spaceships) have arrived, clusters of small communities overflowing with ambitious projects. Damanhur, with more than forty years of history and over a thousand members worldwide, is a social and spiritual experience with many stories to tell. “Damanhur Con Te” is a way to collect, share and bring home pieces of the wisdom—or the unconsciousness, depending on how you look at it—that has guided us on this adventure.
The Damanhur Federation, situated in Valchiusella, North-West Italy, is one of Europe’s longest-lasting spiritual-esoteric communities. Nevertheless, there has hitherto been nearly no scientific study of this group, with the exception of a handful of specialised-journal articles. This collection fills that gap by collating the various scholarly contributions which over the years have dealt with Damanhur, aiming to present the phenomenon to a public of specialists, students and people who are just curious in a volume focusing on the multidisciplinary nature of the community as a whole. We consider the various spheres making up the social, cultural, spiritual and organisational life of Damanhur through analysis and interpretation of its historical evolution and more recent changes which have affected the community since its founder’s death. The contributions combine field research with theoretical reflection, making use of both qualitative (discursive interviews and participant observation) and quantitative (questionnaires) methods.
At sixteen, the young Oberto, who in his adulthood with the name of Falco Tarassaco would have become the founder of Damanhur, collected his poems in a book and soon after published a short story in the form of letters. There was no trace then of what would have happened a few years later, of his consciousness awakening, or of his social, artistic and spiritual adventure in Damanhur... Or maybe there was! How much of Falco Tarassaco, as an enlightened spiritual guide, is contained in these writings? How many fine threads link the thoughts of young Oberto to the philosophy developed by Falco in his forty years of spiritual teachings? Let’s find these signs together: the meditative reflections which lead us to the themes that Damanhur will later develop. Let’s try to give meanings to the images, the words and the metaphors that seems to be just some poetical exercises. Who knows, out of them we could draw some valuable suggestions for ourselves and, maybe, following his example we could learn our first steps towards spiritual freedom.

Damanhur in Italy has for nearly 45 years been an experiment in human consciousness and in this fully illustrated book Jeff Merrifield outlines the exciting discoveries that the community is making. Short steps for humans, a giant leap for humankind. For more than four decades the spiritual-artistic community of Damanhur has grown from humble beginnings to become a prime mover in terms of spiritual research and the ecological protection of the planet. A group of people which has remained a stable and active entity over all those years, they have developed a sociological tool to enhance their shared experiences, the concept of a Superindividual, where groups of people or even whole communitie...
