Research Journeys

The aim of this book is to provide prospective and current doctoral students, and their supervisors, with a range of narratives of doctoral experiences. The book is an outcome of a conference where both academic and professional doctorate students at different stages of their research shared their experiences of the process of completing a doctorate. The ten candid accounts included in the volume provide a valuable insight into the kinds of challenges that arise and the ways in which these might (or might not) be overcome. In so doing, this book ‘lifts the lid’ on some of the hitherto concealed aspects of the doctoral process. The book also includes a chapter from an established academic with a record of writing about the doctoral student experience, as well as inserts from a doctoral programme leader and an experienced academic supervisor. In the Introduction, the editors review some of the current literature on experiences of the doctoral research journey and the research process. The book concludes with the editors’ reflections on both the unique nature of doctoral research for each individual and the common stages that students experience on the journey.

Having oneself shot. Putting out fires with the bare hands and feet. Biting the body and photographing the marks. Sewing one's own mouth shut--all in front of an audience. What do these kinds of performances tell us about the social and historical context in which they occurred? Fascinating and accessibly written, CONTRACT WITH THE SKIN addresses the question in relation to psychoanalytic and legal concepts of masochism. 34 photos.

Supervising the PhD

This book provides "everything you ever wanted to know about PhD supervision but were afraid to ask!" It is a practical, no-nonsense handbook for both the novice and the experienced higher degree supervisor. The novice will find a developmental sequence of advice, guiding them through all the stages of supervision from the first meeting to viva and beyond. The experienced supervisor will find fresh ideas to improve practice and solve problems. Based both on research among laboratory scientists and social scientists and on many years of experience, the book also draws upon humanities examples and so is invaluable to academics in all disciplines. At a time when there is increasing pressure to ensure 'quality' provision, to improve the PhD completion rate, and to turn out employable graduates, the need for this practical guide is obvious.

How humans' aesthetic perceptions have shaped other life forms, from racehorses to ornamental plants. Humans have bred plants and animals with an eye to aesthetics for centuries: flowers are selected for colorful blossoms or luxuriant foliage; racehorses are prized for the elegance of their frames. Hybridized plants were first exhibited as fine art in 1936, when the Museum of Modern Art in New York showed Edward Steichen's hybrid delphiniums. Since then, bio art has become a genre; artists work with a variety of living things, including plants, animals, bacteria, slime molds, and fungi. Many commentators have addressed the social and political concerns raised by making art out of living mate...
