They Regrettably Appeared in Berea College Yearbooks Too
This book is about one aspect of "popular student culture" during the era of segregation at the college, and the years immediately afterward. In recent years the subject of blackface and other racially insensitive images on campuses has gained national attention. Some colleges and universities are now examining their yearbooks and are finding that racially degrading images appeared throughout the 20th Century. This author has examined Berea College yearbooks online from 1929-1970. Only four annuals contained racially insensitive images, but a total of five negative photos appeared inside the four books. Rather than hide the photographs, the college library and administration has allowed the author to expose and write about them. In dealing with the history of an institution, historians must tell both the negative and positive side of the story. This book fills a missing gap in the college's story. More importantly, it contributes to the college's long-standing interracial commitment, and its continuing "Dialogue on Race and Education."
