The Fox Wife's Tail

In 2005, a dusty collection of papers were discovered in a cellar in Dublin. Untouched since 1860, the papers told the story of Otaro, a Japanese fencing teacher, and Captain Robert Hood, a discharged American soldier. It was a tale of duels, suspense and adventure in a Japan struggling to come to terms with the realities of the steam-powered 19th century. When the two friends discover a samurai lord murdered on the road and his only son and heir kidnapped, they find themselves drawn into a mystery as baffling as it is deadly. They will need sharp wits, sharp swords and stout hearts to survive the enigma that is "The Fox Wife's Tail." Fans of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Patrick O'Brian and Agatha Christie will love this old fashioned adventure story.

These rules have been designed so that players can fight typical small battles between European Colonial armies and their opponents during the period between 1875 and 1910. They use a gridded battlefield, which removes the need to measure both move distances and weapon ranges, thus speeding up the whole process of fighting a wargame. It also removed any doubts or possible disputes as to whether or not a unit has moved too far or if it is in range or not. They also incorporate simple combat resolution systems that likewise speed up game play. The armies needed to fight battles with these rules are small by most wargames standards. This means that you can 'raise' lots of small armies rather than a couple of big ones.

The Portable Wargame has been developed over the past ten years to meet the needs of wargamers who want a fast, easy to learn, simple to use set of wargames rules that don't require the player to purchase and paint a large collection of figures and that can be staged on a small dinner table, a large coffee table, or something even smaller. The rules are designed to be used with a gridded tabletop made up of squares or hexes.

Although the author is a late convert to the joys of Napoleonic wargaming, he soon began to see why so many wargamers love the period. As a result, he set out to write several sets of rules that would use similar game mechanisms to those in his other PORTABLE WARGAME rules, and that would enable him to fight a range of small, medium, and large battles on a relatively small tabletop. This book is the result. Please note that all the rules have been designed to be used with a gridded tabletop made up of squares or hexes.

A Clash of Spheres

A Clash of Spheres

It's late August, 1592. Sir Robert Carey, cousin to Queen Elizabeth from the wrong side of Henry VIII's blanket, remains at his post on the Borders at Carlisle. He has at last been confirmed by his monarch as Deputy Warden and is still deeply in love with Lady Elizabeth Widdrington while despising her elderly, abusive husband (will the man never die?). Carey remains estranged from his dour but lethal henchman, Henry Dodd, after Carey decided, much to Dodd's bafflement, to take the high road during an incident at Dick of Dryhope's tower and 'honourably and skillfully avoided the bloody-pitched battle'. The King's courts are full of sycophants, former lovers bent on revenge, a would-be assassin, a toothdrawer (and philosopher, too) who all gather in Edinburgh, where a great debate on the differences between the Ptolemaic and the Copernican systems, and a demonstration of the planets will be staged. Then a clash of spheres mirroring the same at the human level ensues...

A Chorus of Innocents

Thursday, 12th October, 1592. Eighteen days after the action closes in An Air of Treason, courtier Sir Robert Carey and Carey's surly, larcenous, and loyal henchman Henry Dodd, Land Sergeant of Gilsland, are back in Carlisle and the Debateable Lands, the Border country, the Wild North, the land of the hot trod where the thieving, feuding reiver clans are 'English when it suited, and Scots at their pleasure'. A Chorus of Innocents ushers forward Lady Elizabeth Widdrington, the married woman whom Carey adores but respects. It opens when a very pregnant young woman rides to Lady Widdrington's tower crying that her minister husband has been murdered and she herself has been raped. You will meet ...

The Late Lord

The Late Lord

John Pitt, 2nd Earl of Chatham is one of the most enigmatic and overlooked figures of early nineteenth century British history. The elder brother of Pitt the Younger, he has long been consigned to history as 'the late Lord Chatham', the lazy commander-in-chief of the 1809 Walcheren expedition, whose inactivity and incompetence turned what should have been an easy victory into a disaster. Chatham's poor reputation obscures a fascinating and complex man. During a twenty-year career at the heart of government, he served in several important cabinet posts such as First Lord of the Admiralty and Master-General of the Ordnance. Yet despite his closeness to the Prime Minister and friendship with th...
