At the height of its power and influence in the seventeenth and eighteenth century the VOC - acronym for the United Netherland East India Company - was the greatest commercial concern in the world. The scope of its activities extended from the Cape of Good Hope to Japan. In some aspects, the Baltic trade and the North Sea fisheries were of more fundamental relevance for the economy of the Lowlands. But it was the more spectacular East Indian trade which aroused the admiration and the envy of foreigners, sometimes to the point of war. In this bibliography several topics are covered. Not only technical matters such as the legal status of the VOC, its management, directors and shareholders, but also subjects as voyages, battles, ship building, navigation, geography, natural history, ethnography, mission work, ministration, and many others. With 1674 entries, fully described and fully indexed.
The Work
Rob Krier hat als Architekt, Stadtplaner und Bildhauer ein facettenreiches Gesamtwerk geschaffen: es wird hier erstmals umfassend dargestellt. Nach dem Studium war Krier bei O. M. Ungers und Frei Otto tätig, er führte ein eigenes Büro in Wien und Berlin und lehrte er von 1976 - 1998 an der TU Wien sowie 1986 als Gastprofessor an der Yale University. Anknüpfend an eine Fülle historischer Vorbilder und archetypischer Grundmuster, entwickelte er als Architekt und Stadtplaner Typologien von Straßen- und Platzräumen und war für zahlreiche städtebauliche Projekte in ganz Europa verantwortlich, u.a. im Zuge der IBA in Berlin die Blockrandbebauungen an der Ritterstraße, den Wohnkomplex in der Breitenfurter Straße in Wien, den Stadtteil Kirchsteigfeld in Potsdam sowie eine Vielzahl von Projekten in den Niederlanden.

La presente obra recrea el espacio como tema en la arquitectura y el arte contemporáneos, principalmente en el periodo que abarca desde los primeros años sesenta hasta finales de los ochenta, cuando la idea de espacio cobró un especial protagonismo. El análisis del papel del espacio en las artes se centra en la escultura y sus desbordamientos, de manera que se establece una especie de dialéctica entre el espacio arquitectónico y el escultórico, rastreando los ricos márgenes que se han generado en los límites de ambas disciplinas y que han dado origen a otros nuevos géneros en los que lo espacial aparece como una de sus características más definitorias. Sin pretender llega a hacer una historia de la cultura de una época o momento determinado, este ensayo intenta superar las metodologías al uso en historiografía del arte, así como los conceptos preestablecidos sobre las distintas artes para, sirviéndose de ideas y acontecimientos filosóficos, artístico, musicales, literarios y arquitectónicos, trazar un perfil del ambiente cultural que se respiró en Occidente tras la Segunda Guerra mundial. Phenomenology, Architecture and the Built World
Phenomenology, Architecture and the Built World is an introduction to the methods and basic concepts of phenomenological philosophy through an analysis of the phenomenon of the built world. The conception of the built world that emerges is of space and time fashioned in accordance with a living understanding of what it is for human beings to exist in the world. Human building and making is thus no mere supplementary instrument in the pursuit of the ends of life, but a fundamental embodiment of the self-understanding of human beings. Phenomenological description is uniquely capable of bringing into view the physiognomy of this understanding, its texture and complexity, thereby providing an important basis for a critique of what constitutes its essence and its conditions of possibility.
