Excerpt from The Christian Topography of Cosmas Indicopleustes For the suggestion of this particular author I hardly know whether I am most indebted to Prof. Heiberg of Copenhagen, from whom the suggestion originally came, or to Monsieur Seymour de Ricci, who passed it on to me, and whose friendship enlivened days spent in collating a text, which even the most ardent admirers of Cosmas - if there are any such - must admit is not exhilarating as a whole. A review from Nature, Vol. 84: THE “Christian Topography” of Kosmas Indikopleustes is a very peculiar work. As a monument-of literary style it is precious, for it shows us what terrible rubbish, what wandering and discursive twaddle, people were already writing in the sixth century, when the mental degeneration of the Middle Ages (more properly called the "Dark Ages") had hardly yet set in. As a geographical landmark it is also precious, for the author, twaddlemonger as he was, went to various parts of the East beyond the ken of the ordinary man of the time, and his descriptions of the Somali coast, of Coromandel, and of Ceylon, which he apparently visited himself, in the sixth century, ...

Kosma Aigyptiou Monachou Christianikē Topographia

Excerpt from Kosma Aigyptiou Monachou Christianikē Topographia: The Christian Topography of Cosmas, an Egyptian Monk The Christian Topography of Cosmas Indicopleustes is one of the prodigies of literature. The boldness and perverse ingenuity with which its author, from a long array of irrelevant scripture texts, seeks to construct an impossible theory of the universe can scarcely fail to astonish everyone who reads it. It made its appearance at that period in the world's history, when Christendom, fast losing the light of Greek learning and culture, was soon to be shrouded in the long night of mediæval ignorance and barbarism. The work reflects with singular distinctness this prominent cha...
